Sublime Galleria, Bangalores leading

art gallery, recognised for its
penchant for presenting the best
artists and artworks from across the
country, unveils Symphony by
Padmashri award-winning artist Sri
Thota Tharrani. Uzma Irfan, Founder,
Sublime Galleria and Executive
Director, Prestige Group said, Sri
Tharrani needs no introduction. His
work is legendary and much soughtafter, both in India and internationally.
It is our privilege to present his latest
collection in Bangalore. I invite each
and every one of you to use this
opportunity to view his unique work.
Symphony in musical terms is an
extended musical composition. For
Thota Tharrani, Symphony denotes
an extension of music on canvas. His
joy in listening to the music helps
him create vivid and colourful works,
which are soothing to the eyes while
the music appeases the ears. The
combination and involvement of the
two senses has been beautifully
blended to ensure that the work of
art creates its own music. View the
works and allow his strokes and
colours to create your own personal
compositions.

Editors Letter
Confession time: Ive always kinda hated months November to January. I know, I know, that
sounds rather melodramatic, but just hear me out, okay. I dont know when or how or why it
happened, but for as long as I can remember, Ive greeted the change from summer to winter
with a feeling that can be best described as a sinking heart. Each year, as winter approaches, I
nd myself becoming anxious and cranky, dreading the cold and sun-less evenings, the inability
to look good in a dress without catching pneumonia, and cold, wet sleeves (like I said, I dont
know where that comes from). Recently, I discussed this with my best friend S, and mournfully
told her how I couldnt WAIT for February to arrive. She was puzzled. But I LOVE winter! she
enthused. I associate it with fabulous parties and festivities and barbecues and hot chocolate,
and just thinking about all those things makes me happy!
Later, back home, I thought about what she had said. And I decided to embark on a little
experiment. Over the next few weeks, whenever I felt heavy-hearted seeing woolen scarves or
browned leaves or snifng that winter smell (you know what I mean), I reminded myself of all
the wonderful things that were on their wayChristmas trees, Santa Claus, sunny brunches
with mulled wine, and a New Years vacation with friends. As the evenings
became nippy, I thought about all the lovely new coats Id get to wear.
When my mind worried about frozen hands and food that needs to be
re-re-re heated, I ordered it to think about movies in bed and how
lovely it was that velvet is a big trend this season. And then
something strange happenedI actually felt anticipation
excitement! After years of hating winter, I was actually looking
forward to it. I learned an important lesson hereperception
can totally change your life. When you approach something
with negativity, youre not even giving yourself a chance to
enjoy or experience it properly. But force yourself to think
about the positives, and you may be pleasantly surprised.
This December, Im in a such a good mood. And this issue of
Cosmo holds the promise to make things even better. I plan to
cuddle up with 30 Party Tricks (page 154), maximise all the
smashing soires coming my way, take away several important
tips from our great career story by FB CEO Sheryl Sandberg (The
Next 10 Minutes Will Change Your Career, page 188), and master
the art of creating plum eyes (page 244). Of course, Ill be doing all
these things while humming a happy song under my breath.

Have a great December (and see you next year!),

The STYLISh Sonam

I truly enjoyed Sonam's interview in
the November issue. She is one of
those few actresses in Bollywood who
has an identity of her own. She is
beautiful, fiercely talented, knows her
mind, and has categorically no
apprehensions about speaking it out
loud to the world, unlike the typical,
'factory produced' Bollywood actresses
who have the same old conventional

As we chat, people are hovering. People are always

Turkmenistan, where she sang for the presidents birthday

Gotta go, she says.
A week later, Lopez calls me from her home in Los
Angeles, winding down after a rare day off. She keeps
meaning to go on a vacation, she says, but somehow, she
never does. Luckily, she was able to combine business
with pleasure during last years tour. Smart was
supervising choreographer, so the two would grab time
between showsdinner in London, a club in Istanbul.
For me, its about having a great partner to walk this life
with, she says of Smart, whom she calls her best friend.
I have my own high standards for what I want in a
partner and how I want to be treated. I bring a lot to the
table. Im not talking about the material things but what I
have to offer as a personlove and loyalty and all the
things that make a good relationship.
And when she commits to a man, she gives herself
completely. Its funny, early on with Beau, I remember
telling him how I have a real button on being ignored,
she says. And he was like, Listen, if somebody ignores
you, then forget them. They dont deserve to have your
attention. But its funny. Sometimes when we dont get
it, we try to get it in a negative way, you know? And then
it becomes a habit, and youre like, Why am I doing
this? she says.
I could go on talking to her for a few more hours, but
my reverie is broken when the kids rush into her room.
Once again, she must leave. The twins need to be put to
bed. But she has one more thing left to do: shimmy into
sparkly black skintight trousers and an abs-baring bra top
and jump in a limo for the Hollywood Bowl, where her
collaborator Pitbull is doing a show. Sometime before
11p.m., shell burst onstage in a surprise appearance as
fireworks explode around her and the crowd loses its
collective mind. In other words, just a normal Tuesday. n

Step # 1 This conversation-starting

look is super-chic but very easy to
create. Start by shampooing and
conditioning your hair with the
TRESemm Climate Control range to
keep your hair from getting frizzy.
This is crucial as any frizz will ruin the
detail in this look.

Step # 2 When your hair is dry,

or you have finished roughly blowdrying, pull it back into a pony, where
you want your bun to be. Tie the pony
high if you want the bun to be for the
evening or low for the day. Keep a side
parting with few strands out to keep
the style free-flowing and billowy.

Step # 3 Then divide the hair into

mini sections; it doesnt have to be
perfect. Twist each section and make
a tiny roll with it pinning it at the
base of the pony. Repeat this with
all sections of the pony, rolling and
pinning them in place till all hair is
fixed in a bun shape.

This party season, keep hair tied up and chic, or free-flowing and loose.

TRESemm helps you get that salon style perfection with your hair.
Salon-like
undone waveS

Step # 1 Waves are big news on the

runways, but not the messy avatar of
summer. Falls waves are defined, and
yet a bit undone, landing between
the straight and wavy territory. To
get this look start by washing and
conditioning with the Smooth and
Shine range to add gloss.

Step # 2 Once done, roughly

blowdry your hair till it is about 60
percent dry. Then starting from the
front, roll sections of the hair into
velcro rollers starting from the root
and rolling them up and away from
the hairline. This is so the hair stays
away from the face.

Step # 3 Then you can wait for the

hair to completely dry naturally or
blow-dry with a dryer to speed up the
process if youre in a rush. Pull the rollers
out without messing up the waves, flip
your hair over and massage the roots to
add volume. Finish with a sprtiz of hair
spray to hold the style in place.

Ian Kerner, Ph.D., a sex therapist in

Well, Kerner has a

to describe what it is about that

(the better you explain your fantasy,
the more likely it is to come to life in a
way that gets you off rather than
makes you feel weird). Maybe a
doctor is sexy to you because hes in
control but generally clinical and sort
of cold, so the idea of roiling his
passion through your desirability is
sexy, says Kerner.
Okay, sure, but how to describe this
without feeling foolish? Erin T., a
30-year-old attorney from
Washington, D.C., says, I actually
think its really hot to lie in bed and

Establish
Some
Limits

Before losing yourself in a character,

be sure to let your partner know what
youre comfortable doing and whats
going too far, especially if youre
experimenting with a punishment
scenario. If you get caught engaged in
espionage (you dirty spy, you!), do you
want a verbal reaming or a light
spanking on the butt? Same goes for
when youre playing a role that
triggers an emotional response. Let
your partner know your limits, and
establish a safe word thatll bring
the action to a halt the second
youre uncomfortable.

Set the
Scene

A wardrobe change
isnt mandatory for
role-playing, but it can definitely add
to the fun. For some women, a wig
going from brunette to red or from
straight to curlycan really help you
get into the idea of a new identity,
says Kerner. The same goes for
dressing up your environment. You
probably wont be able to transform
your bedroom completely into a
classroom for a hot-for-teacher
scenario, but wheeling in a
chalkboard or desk will go a long way.
Erin T. is a French girl based in
Delhi, and likes to wear classic
lingerie and high heels to get into a
1950s housewife role. I take off his
shoes, rub his shoulders, fix him a

140

COSMOPOLITAN december2013

martini, go down on him while hes

drinking it, and the next thing I
know, my high heels are up
around his ears, she says.
Think Mad Men, only
sexier (yes, its possible).
She recommends
considering what type
of man or woman in
uniform turns you
on. If youve
always thought
cops were hot,
you can get
handcuffs
and a fake
police
badge for
less than
`1,000, she
says. Just dont
lose the key!

Fun

Dont
Forget
to Have

After all this planning, it might feel like

youre about to audition for a role on
Broadway, but dont get caught up in
the theatrics of it allthe aim is to feel
turned on, not win an Oscar. If you
break character and burst into
laughter, dont sweat it and move on,
says pretty much everyone I talked to.
We were all good at playing pretend
at one point in our livesthink back to
your childhood and playing house,
says Monika D., a 25-year-old web
developer from Mumbai. Kids know
theyre making up stuff, but they dont
care. At a certain age, were supposed
to put away the imaginary worlds and
stop playing make-believe. The beauty
of role-playing is that you dont have to
give that up (how deliciously
disobedient of you).

Do It
Already

Okay, back to my first

time taking this role-

playing stuff for a whirl. Despite my

lack of experience, Im pervy enough
to have already had a scenario in
mind: a visit to a masseur with
wandering hands. I figured that this
was a pretty low-stakes proposition
worst case, Id feel silly but get a great
massage from my fianc; best case, Id
get some knots worked out and fulfill
a longtime fantasy. Win-win, right?
Following the rules above, I tried to
explain to Christopher what it was
about the massage scenario that got
me so hotmostly the idea that I
could inspire enough lust in a
massage therapist that he would want
to cop a feel. (Look, fantasies are
rarely modest, okay?) I described
specific images that came to mind:
Maybe you could slowly work your
way up my inner thigh and, you know,
accidentally brush between my legs,
I told him. Christopher let out an
intrigued Mmm and immediately
grabbed at my leg. Turns out, the
planning itself can serve as foreplay
way to kill two birds with one hotmassage stone.
When we settled on the scenario,
the wardrobe was easy. Christopher
wore a simple white tee shirt and

lounge pants, the uniform of seemingly
every masseur. I wore a tank top and
jeans, knowing that I wouldnt be
clothed for long. The dialogue
practically came pre-written. Wed
both had our share of professional
rubdowns and knew the script well.
The greatest challenge was how to
turn our home into a spa, especially
without a massage table. Christopher
had never tried role-playing before
either, but he had taken it as a
challenge and told me he had it under
control. I stepped onto our balcony,
the waiting room, while Christopher
readied things downstairs. He came
out to greet me, straight-faced: Tracy?
Hi, Ill be your massage therapist
today. I couldnt help but laugh as I
shook his hand, but I remembered
what my experts had told me about
rolling with the inevitable giggles and
quickly recovered.
He walked me downstairs, where he
had turned our kitchen island into a
massage table by laying down a yoga
mat and layer upon layer of blankets.
Believe it or not, it looked legit. As newage music swelled softly in the
background and candles flickered on
our granite countertop, he calmly
instructed me to take off my clothes and
lie facedown under a sheet while he
went into the other room to wait for me.
My masseur soon returned and
broke out some intoxicating mintscented oil. My giggles had passed and
getting into character proved easyall
I had to do was lie still, breathe deep,
and let him rub me down. Such hard
work! Every touch was filled with
the electric possibility that his
hand would stray under the
sheet. Thankfully, it did...but
only after much anticipation
and teasing. There were
plenty of opportunities for my
pun-obsessed fianc to have
fun. As he ran his knuckles
over a tight section of muscle,
he purred in his best cornyporn voice: Youre so knotty.
It was hilarious and hot, all
at once. At one point,
he reminded me

that I had ordered the full-body

massage and took the sheet off
entirely. I shyly asked, Do you do this
with your other clients? He replied,
Never. Youre the first. I dont know
whats come over me. Soon, we were
both naked, and he was helping me to
fully relax.
Ill spare you the explicit details, but
I will say that if I could give his
services a review, itd be an
enthusiastic five stars. Actually, thats
a total lie. Id keep the secret of
Mr Magic Fingers all to myself.
After all was said and done, and
every muscle in my body had turned
to Play-Doh, I realised that my roleplaying nervousness had been

terribly misplaced. It wasnt

embarrassing, it was freeing, and it
gave both of us permission to do
things we wouldnt have felt

The Dirtbag Who Cheated on You

Your own personal Carlos Danger couldnt keep it in his pants, and
now you cant keep your paranoia in check.

My ex and I dated for a year, and in that time, we were pretty much
together 24/7, says Kanika S, 25. After we broke up, I found out that he
had been cheating on me with a slew of other girls the entire time. It has
really affected me and made me anxious around guys. I feel like I cant trust
anyone. One way to restore your faith in men and trust the next guy you
date is to nd examples of really strong, established couples. Look at your
parents, if theyre still married, or the parents of a friend whose relationship
you admire, suggests Suzanne Lachmann, PsyD, author of the Me Before
We blog on psychologytoday.com. Its a reminder that healthy relationships
do exist, not all men cheat, and you need to have faith that delity is possible
in a long-term relationship. You also need to do what your ex couldnt: be
honest with yourself. A lot of times we project onto people what we want
them to be, says Melissa Richman, PsyD, a relationship therapist in Beverly
Hills, California. Rather than group all men together as cheaters, dig deep
and explore if maybe he wasnt the person you told yourself he was and if
there were red ags you chose to ignore.

The Guy You

Destroyed

You thought you two were

meant to be...only to find out
that hes not that into your
gender.

When youre the one wielding

the heart machete, its tempting
to keep in touch to make sure
the poor guys doing all right...
but thats not the best idea.

I found out that my ex, who Id

dated for years, now has a boyfriend,
says Sara K, 22. I was super offended
he didnt tell me himself. I thought
we were closer than that. You are
entitled to feel angry or like you
were used, but youre better off not
trying to get him to explain himself
to you. He was probably confused
when he was dating you, and hes
not going to provide you with any
answers that are going to clarify the
situation since he is working that out
for himself, says Berman.

I dumped a really nice guy, says

Alia B, 26. He hasnt moved on.
On some level, you recognise that
the guy didnt deserve to be strung
along, and checking in on him is a
way to alleviate your guiltbut there
might be a deeper issue at play. You
may be feeling down on yourself, and
keeping in contact with a guy who
liked you more than you liked him
is an easy way to get an ego boost.
Youre too good a person to keep
him hanging while you work out your
issues, so cut the cord.

Not cool.

My ex broke up with me with

this spiel about how he was too
young to be in a relationship this
serious, says Alisha T, 28. A
year later, he was married! I was
crushedit was like, clearly, you
just didnt want to get serious with
me. Sure, this feels like a punch
in the gut, but think of it this
way: Compatibility has nothing
to do with whether or not youre
worthy; its about being a good
match, says Jenn Berman, PsyD,
host of The Love and Sex Show
With Dr. Jenn on Cosmo Radio
US. That guy wasnt right for
you, and you cant let him be the
arbiter of your worth. And hey,
at least youre in good company
the wife uffers club includes
all the models who the formerly
marriage-averse singer Adam

about the engagement from your
ex, react gracefully. You may be
tempted to make him explain why
he wasnt ready for commitment
with you, but dont! His answer
wont change the outcome. Itll
just make you look needyand
youre so much cooler than that.
Just wish him the best, then call a

The Ex Whos

You have an extensive list of

mutual friends, and because
you really dont feel like
becoming a creepy recluse,
you kind of have to see this
guy on the reg.
My ex was in the same college
as me, so my girlfriends and I
would hang out there all the time,
says Ekta R, 19. We broke up
on really bad terms, but I didnt
want people to think I was antisocial, so I continued to hang
out at his friends place with the
rest of my friends, even though
I hated seeing him. There is a
tonne of pressure to act like youre
okay. Not only do you not want
to disrupt the social dynamics of
your group, but you may even
feel like you have to stay friends
with this guy in order to prove
how awesome you are and what a
mistake he made by breaking up
with you. Youre invalidating the
fact that youre pissed off as hell or
youre sad and heartbroken, says
Belisa Vranich, PsyD, co-author
of Hes Got Potential. Right after
a relationship ends, you will very
likely need to cry and punch things
and get everything out, not to
pretend everything is okay to save
face. Tell your friends you need
to take a time out from any events
where your ex will be present, and
hang out with strictly your people
for a while. Also, be wary of a
specic subset of this category: the
ex who cant quit you. This is the
guy who touches base every once
in a while to make sure youre still
reeled in, but its never a quality
interaction, says Vranich. He just
wants to know you still want him
or are still thinking about him, and
every time you respond to his texts
or e-mails, you get your hopes up
only to have them crushed when it

The One Who

Got Away

You saw a future with this guy,

and now it seems dark and
grey without him in it.
I thought I was going to be with my
ex forever, says Heena K, 27. So
when he left, it messed up my vision
of my life. Heres the thing: what
you are enamoured with is a fantasy.
There is no way of knowing if you
would have lived happily ever after
with this guy, because in real life,
you cant control every factor, says

Vranich. You also need to get over the

fear that youll never nd anyone else
who gets you the way your ex did. I
recommend my patients ask an ex like
this to coffee. Time can make a saint
of someone who isnt all that amazing,
and when you actually hang out with
the person, the reality of who he is
will likely shatter your perfect fantasy
of him. This suggestion comes with
some caveats: that the guy is not some
kind of sadistic bastard who will toy
with your heart and that its been
more than a year since you broke
up. Maybe youre hung up on him
because in your mind, you had these
deep, intense discussions, but when
you meet him again, hes distracted
and nothing like the soul mate you
remember. Even if Channing freaking
Tatum walks through the door, know
that this is not the one who got away,
because the right guy for you will also

SErvE AN It BuBBlY!
During the launch of Chandon Brut and Chandon
Brut Ros by Met Hennessy India, Cosmo caught
up with Gaurav Bhatia, Marketing Director for
the brand, and scored these valuable tips for serving
your sparkling...
Chilling: Use the half rulehalf water, half ice,
half-an-hour in an ice bucket. Or chill your bottle in
the fridge by laying it horizontally for three hours.
Storage: If you think you need a deep, dark
labyrinth to store your wine, think again. The key
is to store Chandon horizontally in a cool, dry, and
dark place to maintain its quality.

Serving: The ideal glass is

flute-shaped, so not to allow
the wine to breathe too
muchor you will lose the
bubbles.
Taste: See, smell and savour. Take in
the different shades of gold or pink
depending on whether youre having a
Brut or Ros; the light, lovely and generous
bubbles dancing in the flute. Try to recognise the
aromas of fruits, flowers and spices. Sip the wine,
let it linger in your mouth, and decide if its
smooth or full-bodied, delicate or complex.

15

Your guests will appreciate these two locally made, delicious sparkling wines (with grapes
grown in the Nashik region. The wines have been crafted combining the finest grapes with the
centuries-old method traditionnelle to ensure the signature Chandon style. The Chandon Brut
(`1,200) is straw yellow and has a bright and fresh fruit bouquet of citrus blossom, green
apples with hints of vanilla. The Chandon Brut Ros (`1,400) has a vibrant rose gold hue and
smells of ripe cherries and pink grapefruit with subtle hints of guava and rose petals.

this fun game when you have an
intimate get together of 10-15 guests.
Get pens and paper and ask each
person to draw a graph of how they
think the people at the party are related
to you. Do they think youre co-workers?
Relatives? College friends? Encourage
the guests to guess and compare
graphs. Then show everyone a graph of
the real set of relationships and
whoever is the closest, wins a prize!

PaRty BINGO: Prepare a grid for each

guest with characteristics of each guest

of someone who matches the

the person who works for a advertising

to write stories that ask questions.
I want people to read my books
and perhaps recognise some of
the issues raised in their own lives.
While I dont want to thrust my

In the entire period before I

incredible support from my family.
My mom and dad collectively
are my rock! My brother is the
ultimate support with his calm, cool
stabilising energy to balance my
creative chaos.
I always sought out avenues
to grow as an artist. In fact, my
big break came via a writing
conferencean event that brought

together wonderful creative people

who were committed to improving
their craft. Apart from all the
learning, I met my agent here. That
was the nicest outcome, and that
conference made it happen.
The writing process for me is a
constantly evolving journey. I try to
force myself to write every single
day. Many times, Ill be staring at a
blank screen with no idea what to
do. Other times, I move to pen and
paper and just start scribbling notes
and undecipherable graphs. I create
character sketches, plot outlines,
relationship graphs and interview
experts on the subject matter Im
writing on. Its all very unscientic,
but I nd that structure within chaos
is my ideal method of madness.

We got all our book-related questions answered by Vaishali Mathur, Senior
Commissioning Editor, Penguin India. You writing this down?
Q: I want to write,
but am freaked
out by the thought
of competition. Is
there an openness
to fresh voices in
the market?
Vaishali Mathur: Its an exciting
time in Indian publishing.
The industry is evolving, and
publishers are much more open to
experimentation. With the rise of
the aspirational class, there is a lot
of mass market and self publishing
happening too.
Q: Whats the best way to get a
publisher to listen up? Do I have a
better chance of winging it through
an agent?
VM: It all depends on the proposal
and the strength of the writing. That
said, agents have direct connects
with commissioning editors and
know their lists well. They are
also quick to assess potential. So

172

COSMOPOLITAN december2013

that is very much a viable means.

However, it might not always be
possible to get the appropriate
agent. In that case, directly
approaching the publisher is
an option too. It may just take
more time.
Q: What can I do to make sure
that my proposal stands out in that
huge stock pile every top publishing
house must have?
VM: Write a good story. Language
can be brushed up by editing, but
the story has to be really, really
good. If you have been writing and
getting published, it will add to your
credibility. Another thing that helps
is a solid online presence. It ensures
that when your book gets out, you
have a ready readership. Publishers
do consider online proles while
reviewing proposals.
Q: What works better with a
publishera complete rst draft or
a proposal package? What should

the package include?

VM: Either can work. The idea of
a proposal is to give the publisher a
complete visualisation of your book
and yourself. Include a synopsis,
giving as much detail as possible,
and a couple of sample chapters.
Send the whole draft in case you
feel a proposal might not be able
to do justice in reecting your
project. And dont forget to attach
an (interesting) bio note about
yourself.
Q: How much money can a rst
timer like me expect to make?
VM: The money an author makes
is based primarily on royalties and
the number of copies of the book
sold. New authors often get swayed
by big advances without realising
that the advance is a part of your
royalties. So the more important
thing is to get a competent editor
and a reliable publisher. The rest
will fall in place.

During the writing process, the

one thing to guard against would be
procrastination. Its a constant battle
for me. Once I am writing, I know
I am making progress, but before
writing, its a blank Word document,
and I am supposed to put 75,000
new words on it, all from my head,
and that really intimidates me!
If youre looking to get published,
bear in mind that the difference
between being selected and being
tossed away is novelty. Also, choose
the right publisher. New writers
should have an understanding
of what kinds of books a certain
publisher comes out with. Usually,
they are overwhelmed with the rst
acceptance mail they get, and dont
take all factors into consideration

before signing a contract. Some

publishers take advantage of that,
and by the time the writer catches
on, its already too late.
The important thing is to write.
Promotion comes later, once
everything is in place. Today, people
have short attention spans, and if
a writer keeps talking about her
upcoming book for a year before it
comes out, people lose interest.
I am writing professionally, but
along with that, I also hold a full time
job. I feel a day job is helpfulit
keeps the mind occupied and provides
structure. The key is balance.

Daisy Hasan, 39 is a critically acclaimed writer from Shillong.

Her novel, The To-Let House (Tara Books), was long listed for
the Man Asia Literary Prize and short listed for The Hindu
Literary Prize. Daisy plugged into her past and brought alive a
tender, impressionable, and effervescent world.
I wrote my debut
novel, The To-Let
House, quite by
accident. I had sent
in a short piece for
a creative writing
workshop that Tara
Books was organising. My piece was
in the voice of a young girl growing up
as an outsider in Shillong. Energetic
editors recognised a striking voice in
this piece, and nurtured it into a full
edged novel.

My publishers were both audience

and critics. In this, I was fortunate.
Yet the book took a long time to
complete. It sang itself out over
10 long years, during which time I
moved to another continent, found a
soul mate and nished a Ph.D.
Frankly, I was worried that the
book may never see the light of day.
In retrospect, the wait was worth it.
The few ashes of brilliance were
slowed down by several false starts.
Patience was critical. I am a very

My rst piece of writing was a
book. I did maintain a diary when
I was 16, but Ive learnt that its
something that never turns out
well. A diary is basically your most
private, and sometimes very twisted,
emotions and thoughts in pen and

somebody will get their hands on
that stuff and its never pretty!

Ive rarely attempted

book proposals. I prefer
to write the whole book.
Annie Zaidi, 35, built on her artsy family background with
writing that is edgy and experimental. The spunky Mumbai
based authors blog served as a springboard to bagging a book
contract. Annie recently came out with a collection called Love
Stories #1to14 (Harper Collins), thats re-imagined the genre.
I do not recall ever
making a conscious
decision to take up
writing. I began to
take writing more
seriously mainly
because of the
encouragement I received from
my English Literature teachers in
college. It is there that I co-edited
the students magazine. By the
time I nished college, I knew I
could write decently, and didnt
know if I could do anything else. I
had no clear ambition or, indeed,
motivation. Nor did I have many
anxieties in the early years. I had
the arrogance and condence that
young people often do. I think I
needed it knocked out of me, and
that happened very quickly when I
moved to big cities and my reading
widened to include contemporary
Indian writers who were clearly
leagues ahead in terms of both
creative expression and basic
knowledge of the world.
In this journey, friends and family
have been reasonably supportive,
though I did not show my work to
them while it was in process. Not
unless those friends happened to be
writers themselves. It helped that
weve had well-known writers in
our family and cultural growth has
always been encouraged.
I blogged a lot over the years, and
was offered my rst book deal on
the strength of those posts. I did
attend writers seminars, but I am
not good at networking, and when
I attend, I do so in a quiet way.

However, its always good to hear

others speak of their ideas, and be
introduced to new kinds of writing.
Writers come in all personalities, so
what they take from a gathering of
similiar people depends on what they
come looking for.
Ive rarely attempted book
proposals. I prefer to just write the
whole book and then try to get an
editor interested in the manuscript.
I dont have a xed schedule, but I
try and write regularly, and I read
regularly too. General advice: read.
Read constantly. Those who live in
the world of words must be familiar
with the landscape. Reading is what
you want others to do, when you
write. You better know the worth
of what youre offering before you
n
expect anything from readers.

tentative person. Writing is one

way of nding certainty. As the
story grew in strength, I relied
intuitively on the characters, who
slowly found their feet, to tell
the tale. It is wonderful to have
a critical audience for your work.
My sister, Anjum Hasan, is a
professional writer, and feedback
from family and friends was never
in short supply. However, writing
is essentially a lonely business.
There is no one way of doing it.
Sticking with it for long enough
is what usually works in the end,
in my experience. The important
thing is to be yourself, to write
from crystallised experience. To
write because its the only thing
you can do.
I am a very slow writer
perhaps not a very disciplined
one! Eventually, I fell into the
habit of writing everydaythat
was the most anchoring, and
perhaps the most recommended,
experience.
This is the best time to be a writer
in India. However, the plenitude
in publishing can lead to some
indifferent work. I would not
recommend rushing into print.
As for it being tenable to be a
full time writersome struggle,
some soar. If its compelling
enough, one sticks to it, no matter
what the markets like.

O

n 24 March 2008,
I headed to my
rst day of

Facebook. I
remember feeling
excited. I also felt a
little nervous...maybe
even a little scared
about this new
challenge. I knew the
tech business well
after spending
more than six
years at Google. I
had shared many
dinners with CEO
Mark Zuckerberg
before he offered me the

Facebooks mission. My fear
was more the general anxiety
you feel over the risks associated
with a new job and the worry

188

cosmoPolitaN december2013

that you wont succeed.

I parked my car and went up to an
industrial, open-plan ofce space. At
the time, the ofce walls were
bare. Today, those walls are
lled with posters that reect
the companys philosophy
and encourage employees.
Proceed and be bold,
declares one. Move
fast and break things,
advises another. But the
one that would have
helped me on that rst
morning doesnt make
a statement; it asks a
question: What would
you do if you werent
afraid? This question
speaks to everyone,
but I think it has special
signicance for women.
Fear is at the root of so
many of the barriers that

Find someone who wants an equal

In 2009, we

extended an
offer, she came
in to ask some
follow-up questions about the role. She did
not mention hours, but she was the typical
age when women have children. So I went
for it: If you think you might not take this
job because you want to have a child soon,

Im happy to talk about this. I explained

that although it was counter-intuitive, right
before having a child can actually be a
great time to take a new job. If she found a
role challenging and rewarding, shed be
more excited to return to it after giving
birth. If she stayed put, she might decide
that her job was not worth the sacrifice.
Priti accepted our offer. By the time she
started with Facebook, she was already

baby, took four months off and came back
to a job she loved. She later told me that if

explains relationship expert Susie
Tuckwell. So its all about approaching
them in the right way. If your parents are
good at listening, sit them down and say
that its time you started making your
own decisions and that you are willing to
take the consequences of making the
wrong ones, because thats the way youll
learn. Tell them that you appreciate their
advice, and when you want it, you will
definitely ask for it. This shows them that
theyre totally still needed in your life; just
not every two seconds.

I was out with

this guy Ive
been dating
and he got
drunk and told me he
loved me. Did he mean
it? Im so confused.
A: Alcohol affects different men in
different ways. It slows down the brains
frontal lobe, which controls judgment and
inhibition. So yes, it is possible he was
sharing feelings he didnt have the guts
to express sober. But when guys drink
they also become sexually motivated. So
the L-bomb could just be him
subconsciously trying to get into your
pants. Do you want him to mean what he
said? Then ask him if he remembers what
he said and leave the question open
ended. That way hes likely to share his
true thoughts. If he admits saying it but
doesnt give an explanation, ask him
point blank if he meant itits blunt but
thats the only way to know. The words
did leave his mouth and you have every
right to know if they were legit.

Q: I broke up with my ex and

now hes being a complete jerk.
Hes going around spreading
rumours about me and

How do I get him to stop?
A: Try and disengage from him
completelytake him off your Facebook
list etc. Give him time to lick his
woundshes hurt and angry. Hopefully
hell feel like a git and apologise
eventually. Dont involve your friends in
the drama. It can be good to approach
him calmly to find out why he feels the
need to say nasty things about you. The
worst thing you could do is provoke him
publiclylike on social media, so no
matter how tempted you are, do not
send out angry posts into cyberspace.

moved out a year ago and they
still feel like they need to take
decisions for me like whom I
should meet, how I should spend
my money etc. How do I get
them to stop?
A: It can be frustrating, but its important
to realise where their need to nag is
coming from. Parental nagging is almost
always about fearfear that we might
make a mistake that they cant protect us
from, fear that we might choose a path
that takes us away from them, that they

If there was an award category for
Multi-Tasking Bollywood Hottie,
Farhan Akhtar would win it, without
much contention. The man is an
actor, singer, producer, director,
script-writer, lyricist, television host
and now social activist, and very
successful at each of his roles. His last
release, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, was a
tremendous hit that proved his mettle
as an actorand won him tonnes of
accolades. Ironic, considering Farhan
became an actor simply because he
felt like acting! Here, Mr A talks
about date night faux pas, his
upcoming projects and his recent
social initiative, MARD.

Cosmo: What, according to

you, makes a relationship work?
Farhan akhtar: Honesty! That
is the biggest thing!
C: Whats your biggest turn on?
Fa: A nice, radiant smileit has
the power to light up someones face.
C: and your number-one

Fa: Probably body odour!
C: Whats the one thing a woman
must never say on a date?
Fa: I dont know a lot about these
things, but certainly not something
like, Can I get my mom along?

C: What should a woman do to

get your attention?
Fa: There are many things a
woman can do to get my attention
like just call out my name. That would
be a good start I think.
C: Describe yourself in five
words...
Fa: Somebody who lives in Bandra.
C: Whats the one thing every

C: Whats keeping you busy

right now?
Fa: Im just wrapping up Shaadi
Ke Side Effects, opposite Vidya Balan.
Im also writing dialogues for Zoyas
next film. Apart from this, Im
working with other directors and
looking at producing some films. And
Im doing my music concerts as well!
C: how do you deal with
criticism?
Fa: It honestly depends on
who it is coming from. If its a
newspaper or a tabloid, I
simply ignore it. But if its
from people whose
opinions I care
about, then I listen
carefully!
C: Does your
mindset change
when youre
producing a
movie, rather
than directing
or acting in it?
Fa: No, there
isnt a major shift,
but as a producer,
it is slightly more
hands-off because
you realise it is
someone elses vision
that you are supporting.
So you dont get attached
to it as deeply as I think
you would when you direct
a movie. It still is yours, but
you know it belongs to
someone else.
C: Is there a genre of
movies you like
working on the most?
Fa: Not the most, but I
can tell you the ones I like
working on the least. Itll be

Fa: I blush.
C: tell us about your

Fa: I dont know...
khichdi, maybe? I dont
know what to call it. Its
retro, snazzy, comfy...
whatever you call it.
C: Can a guy be
completely honest in a
relationship?
Fa: Well, he can try!

C: Its so great that youve

started a social cause that raises
awareness against gender
discrimination. tell us more.
Fa: My initiative is called MARD
(Men Against Rape and

that I hope will make people start
questioning the basic attitude our
society has towards women. Luckily,
there are many people doing some
pretty amazing work in this area, but
this is a responsibility that every single
person should share. Thats how I
thought of this.
COSMO NOTE:
Farhan conceived MARD after a

and then murdered by her watchman

to assume he likes her or is
attracted to her. Today, men and
women work together, work out
together, and socialize together
in completely platonic ways.
And since they share so many
common interests, friendship is
no longer about gender, but more
to do with how well you connect

Men and
women can
be just friends!
with someone.
Which brings me to a very
important result: sometimes, when
a man says he is good friends with
a woman who is not his lover, he
actually means it!
That said, there are ways to handle
friendships with the opposite sex.
For one, you should let your partner
know that their place in your life
is sacrosanct and irreplaceable.
And if there ever comes a point
where feelings start to develop, Id
suggest you be upfront about the
situation. I believe its always better
to say whats on your mind, than let
confusion enter a relationship.

Every night

night!

All men will agree that when
their girlfriend asks them,
Honey, do you remember what
day it is today? its like losing
a PS3 match to your arch rival.
In that split second, our mind
thinks of all possible dates that
could be important to you
from our anniversary, to the rst
time we said I love you, or your
pet poochs birthday!

214

COSMOPOLITAN december2013

However, if we fail this test,

all hell breaks loose. Everything
from our integrity to our love for
you comes under the scanner.
In all earnestness, men are just
bad at remembering dates. And
that doesnt mean we dont care.
It just means we dont quite
understand how remembering
the exact day we rst ate dinner/
held hands/went shopping will
improve our relationship now!
Heres my suggestion: instead
of shedding copious tears about
how we forget a particular
incident, why not make every
date in the calendar into a
special night?! Itll kill two birds
with one stone: one, youll have
enough occasions to actually
point one event out, and two,
itll save us from remembering
a long list of dates! Youre very
welcome!

The TwoTone Trick

Double-duty blinkers, brushed with two
complementary shades, are the new
way to wear metallics. The trick lies in
picking shades that work well together
and look good on you. Some help here:
aqua, khaki, bronze and gold work well
on Indian tones.
Dominique used: Perfection Lumire
Foundation, Correcteur Perfection, Les
Beiges Powder, Le Blush Crme De
Chanel in Fantastic, Stylo Yeux
Waterproof in Khaki Precieux and True
Blue, Le Volume De Chanel Mascara,
Rouge Allure Velvet in La Dsire and
Le Vernis in Alchimie, all Chanel.

The Plum
Essential

Deep purple and wine shades are de

rigueur this seasonnot for your lips, but
for your eyes! The easiest way to get it
right is by swiping a cream shimmery
plum shadow in a round shape, along the
upper and lower lids. Fix the colour in
place with a light dusting of translucent
powder and use a lighter shade from the
same colour family on the mouth and
nails to harmonise the look.
Dominique used: Le Blush Crme De
Chanel in Revelation, Illusion DOmbre in
Fatal, Rouge Coco Shine in Secret, and Le
Vernis in Rouge Moir, all Chanel.

Eye Confetti
Sparkle is big this seasonand just in
time for the festive month! An easy way
to work the trend: after swiping the
upper lid with black cream shadow,
brush a gel or powder shimmer over it.
Finally, cut miniature pieces of tinfoil
and stick them along the lash-line with
false-eyelash glue.

Twisted Braids

Always easy and super-versatile, our fave celebs

are moving away from plain plaits and wearing
them double, textured and roped around the
head. The trick is to loop differentlyeither the
fishtail or the inside-out French braid (like Rita
Oras)and twist the sections all the way to the
end. Texture is key to these stylesuse a hair
powder to rough it up if your hair is fine, or a
mild-hold hair cream if its thick.

If theres one quick way to add edge to an

evening outfit, its with a clean centre part. One
caveat: rough, wavy roots can kill the style, so
whether you wear your hair open or tied, you
still need to blow-dry the roots, lifting them up
and smoothing them on the side as you go. Use
a tailcomb to create a straight part, and finish
with a few spritzes of an anti-frizz hairspray.

The perfect match for that girly

dress? Tough hair! Create this
look with products that add
volume and texture. Section the
top half and divide it further into
three sections. Lift and twist each
towards the left, then lightly tease
and twist into one epicentre,
pinning it on the underside.

Smooth Waves
Varying degrees of wavesfrom almost-straight to tousledhave found favour this party season.
All you need is some mousse and the right barrel size of curling irons. A smooth style like this needs
a large curling barrel used only from the mid-length or bottom half of your hair. Roll your hair over
the barrel not more than three or four times to keep the top smooth.

Retro Swirls
Get vintage-style waves that go well with

trend alert: flawless

skin is in!

Make a clean sweep and let your complexion speak for itself. We tell you how to
get the look and the understated accessories that go with it.
Sometimes it's good to whisper
and not to scream. We mean
choosing to perfect the basics,
starting from your skin. While
good skin is mostly genetic, you
can still fake it by using the right
products in the right sequence.
Most essentially though, start
by moisturising your skin
thoroughly to plump it up.
When it comes to make-up, start
by dotting concealer on spots that
need it and then pat it into the skin
to blend. Dot concealer over your
T-zone and blend into the
corners of the nose and mouth.
Set it with a dusting of powder
and add colour with a touch of
blush. We love Lakm Face
Stylist range that is made with
all these basics that are created
to get a flawless finish.

COSMOPOLITAN december2013

Ive never been able to find and wear a perfume thats totally
me. Thats because I have an almost nonexistent sense of smella condition called anosmia that
affects nearly 2 million people in the US. Its not fatal, but it is
really annoying. Maybe Ive just seen too many romantic
films where a man becomes intoxicated by the scent of a
woman, but I firmly believe that nothing expresses a womans
personality as much as her signature perfume.
Ive had to rely on the preferences of the men Ive dated
to help me make my choices. Ive even consulted the nostrils
of friends (and a few doormen!) to tell me if Ive overdosed or
required another spritz. But after my last relationship ended,
I decided it was time to find a fragrance that fit me.
Thats where Sue Phillipsa New Yorkbased
scentologist, famous for her 11-question Scent Personality
Test and customised fragrances that stem from itcame in.
After quizzing me, I was told that my perfect scent fell in the
fresh family (think citrus, grassy, and ozonic notes...aka the
smell after a rainstorm). Sue set out a tray of 18 bottles filled
with blends of 15 to 20 different ingredients. Given my issue,
I didnt expect to smell a thing. Still, Sue prodded me on,
untilmiracle!I was able to detect a faint whiff of four
individual blends: citrus, juniper, green, and balsamic.
According to the science of aromatherapy and Sues extensive
research, they all evoke easygoing, uplifting, and sprightly
feelings...words that, I like to think, describe me. She
blended them in a little glass bottle and handed it over.
But at home, when I placed my nose against my wrist and
inhaled...again, there was nothing. How was this possible?
According to my ENT specialist, Stacey Silvers, MD, we
all have 12 cranial nerves in our brains. Most smells hit the
first one, the olfactory nerve...and mine was damaged. But
my fifth one worked. Its function was to detect strong smells
like those I picked up on during the session with Sue.
However, once I sprayed the fragrance and the notes were
diffused into the air, they lost their potency.
Now I buy perfume for different reasons: perhaps its the
best-seller du jour, maybe I love the shape of the bottle.
Whatever the reason, no-one can say theres one scent that
screams me. What I wear to dinner tonight will likely be
totally different than what I leave in my wake tomorrow. And
really, thats who I am: someone who is hard to pin down,
unpredictable, and thrives on changing the rules.

Wonder what its like to be backstage at fashion week?

Designers and show directors run helter-skelter, rows of
models get their hair and make-up done, and there are
clothes everywhere, all in one high-energy room! Thats
exactly what was going on at the Cosmo and
TRESemm Backstage party! Everything from the invite
(which was a VIP backstage pass) to the ambience (The
Foyer, One Style Mile, was designed to resemble a

ramp-ready hairstyled on models, giant screens played
some of our favourite shows from the Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week Spring 2014, including that of designers
Falguni and Shane Peacock. All in the midst of some
well-choreographed actionfittings, line-ups, and and
fab, backstage-inspired food from Olive at the Qutub
strawberries, mini chocolates, pizza, energy bars, and

The last place Forest should be at

this time of the day in the middle of
the week was a restaurant. He should
grab a sandwich and hunker down at
his desk. Should but wouldnt. He was
reaching across the table for his water,
when movement at the end of his row
of tables caught his attention. He knew
Jordan stood there before he even
looked up, and when he did meet her
gaze he almost swallowed his tongue.
Sweet loving damn.
She wore a short-sleeve black dress
that hugged her waist, then ared out
over her hips before coming to rest a
few inches above her knees. And those
legs. Long, lean and bare. Just when
he recovered from the memory of
his ngertips against those thighs, he
noticed the spiky red heels.
But the body, that walk, had
nothing on her smile. It lit her face
and brought a twinge of color to
her cheeks.
There was no way in hell hed be
able to choke down an appetizer
tonight.
He somehow got to his feet, but
God knew he didnt remember
standing. A napkin dangled from his
ngers. When she stopped across from
him, he threw it down and pivoted
around her to pull out her chair.

The subtle whiff of orange

wrapped around him as he leaned
down to whisper in her ear. That
was quite an entrance.
She glanced up at him for the
briefest of seconds. I decided to be
memorable this time.
His comment at the wedding about
her dress came rushing back on him.
How he ever thought this woman
could blend in, even for a second,
stunned him. Hed be able to pick
her out in a room full of hundreds of
women. Something about the way she
carried herself and the condence that
swirled around her had him chasing
and wanting and generally forgetting
his usual rules about women.
With a broken engagement on
his scorecard, he preferred to keep
his emotional distance. Not that
he shunned commitment. He just
preferred his life outside work as
simple as possible and long-term
dating struck him as the exact opposite
of simple.
Enjoy women, date when he had
time and otherwise focus on building
his business. Hed mapped out that
three-part plan the day after his
father had security escort him out the
lobby doors of the family business.
He hadnt been back and, despite all
his fathers yelling and threats, Forest
never had to crawl back and beg for
forgiveness, either.
Thank you for not wearing that

dress to work. Forest sat again,

deliberately pushing all thoughts of
his dysfunctional family out of his
mind. I would have violated more
than one HR rule to get near you.
Me and half the staff. No question
about it.
Theres nothing provocative about
this dress. She ran her ngertips
across her exposed collarbone.
No plunging neckline and only a
minimum of skin showing.
That outt is all about anticipation.
A guy sees it and hopes hell be treated
to more. And seeing her ngers skim
over her skin had him tripping over his
words. So that you know, thats sexier
than just about anything.
She unfolded her napkin and laid
it across her lap. Arent you the
sweet talker?
You should be impressed I can
think at all at the moment. Not
that the babble running through
his brain made any sense. He saw
her and forgot about work and his
responsibilities and even about that
