Maari De Souza Founder Communication Sent to TCS Families and Faculty on January 16, 2015 We all love reading good news about our School and generally look forward to calls and coverage from press and sharing our latest projects, innovations and achievements. We had that honor twice last year. We are writing to let you know about some different news and to provide some background information. ‘Over past few years the Office of the New York State Comptroller (OSC) has been auditing non-public schools, such as The Child School, that provide special education services to children referred by the Department of Education. Because tuition at Child and similar non-public schools is paid with public funds, the State Comptroller regularly reviews expenditures to see if money has been spent efficiently. As most of you are aware, The State Comptroller's office carried out an audit of The Child School for the 2008-2009 through 2010-2011 school years. OSC recently completed its audit report and has shared it with the School and posted it on its website. The repor ical of certain expenditures and recommends that certain expenses incurred by the School between 2009 and 20111 be disallowed. The results of the audit are still subject to review and implementation by the NY State Education Department. We hope you will take the time to find and review the full report online at httpz//ose state.ny.us/audits/allaudits/093015/12s67.pdf. The report includes not only the OSC findings but also our response to those findings on pages 18 through 23. Our response summarizes the changes made at The Child School since 2013 and also describes the School's achievements throughout the audit period. In spite of the fact that the audit period coincided with a period of difficult transitions at the School, the School continued during the audit years to provide a strong academic and social support program that led to extraordinary successes in our graduating classes. In our exit meetings with the OSC these successes were recognized and appreciated. Going forward, ‘as we continue to offer an academically enriched program for your children, we will focus on incorporating many of the recommendations of the OSC into our daily school operations. Progress in this regard was also recognized and appreciated by the OSC in our exit meetings. We hope this overview and the link to the full report will be helpful to you as you become aware of press or online reports of the Audit summary, ‘As always, we hope you will feel free to call if you have any questions. We hope to continue our regular reports to you and your families and will be pleased to have your feedback and know about your concerns, Looking forward to another year of celebrating our students’ social-emotional and academic successes, ‘The Child SchooV/Legacy High School __587 Main Street, Roosevelt Island, NY 10044 Phone: 212-223-8276 Fax 212-223-5031 www.thechildschool.org, FOUNDED IN 1973.
