BRUISES

Bruise refers to an area of skin discolouration caused by the


escape of blood from the ruptured underlying vessels following
injury.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Skin appears deep red, purple, and/or bluish
Swelling
Pain
WHAT TO DO
1. Rest affected part.
2. If skin is broken, wear gloves.
3. Apply cold compresses or ice/cold packs immediately. (Do
not apply ice directly to skin.) The cold reduces the flow of
blood to the area and therefore reduces the size of the
bruise. It also decreases the inflammation in the area and
decreases swelling.
4. If possible elevate the area to slow the blood flow.
5. Take the individual to the clinic If there is are severe
pains and swelling in that area.
5. Applying pressure also helps reduce blood flow and
swelling.
DO NOT

apply warm or hot compress.

apply menthol containing liniment.
