Flame Test Lab Poster

Anna Navarro & Megan Larose

Abstract:
The elements produce different types of
colours when in heat. The Flame Test lab is
about finding the elements in the solution
provided and testing to see what the colour
will be for that certain element. The change in
energy levels of the electrons are also
observed in this lab and is part of the
introduction of electron configuration. There
was a given element and we had to conclude
what else was mixed with it to create that
certain colour of flame.

Methods:
Our research came from the
knowledge that we have just learned
from the previous lesson, as well as the
notes that we were able to take, and the
instructions/data provided on the lab
packet. We collected our data with the
table provided in the lab packet and
using the element table.

Results

Conclusions

My partner and I found out what the flame color was

for each metallic salt, including the formula, and the
symbol for each provided sample. To be able to
determine these answers, we used the tools provided
during the lab and tested each solution with a
different set of sticks that had that solution on it and
placed it in the flame. With that, we discovered the
flame color. From the flame color, we used our
element table and our lab packet to find the formula
and metal symbol. For the unknown mixtures, we
used the sticks provided for those and placed it in
the flame as well. Even without knowing the name of
the metallic salt, we were still able to figure out what
it was with our element table.

Our data led us to discover that even with the most

minimal piece of information, we were still able to
find a solution to each one as we tested it. Both my
partner and I will be benefit from this by learning how
to read the element table and what else it could
tell/show us just by its symbols alone. Our data is
meant to provide the knowledge of knowing the
variety of colours that can be created with different
mixtures of these metallic salt solutions, and that
many more can be mixed together to have the same
colour as well without needing it to be the same ones
over and over.

Background information for

lab

Objectives:
For the Flame Test lab, the whole
purpose was to find out what color will
be produced with the stick that has the
solution which will help determine the
color of the flame based on the
compound it has. When the stick has not
yet been heated, it is referred as the
ground state. It is simply saying that the
energy level of the electrons are at its
lowest. When it is finally heated and the
flame lights up in a different colour, the
electrons energy level is excited and has
moved up an orbital (further away from
the nucleus). The colour will then
determine what element the solution
contains.
