InterviewFindings

Qualityphysicaleducationisimportantforteenstolearnaboutthebody,andhealthyhabitsthat
youcanfollowthroughinlife.PEexpandsyourawarenessinthehealthaspectoflife,whichisusefulso
thatyoucansupportyourselfwhenyouarestressed,hungry,bored,curious,andfindingshowto
approachcertaintopics.Pg.1515,Themechanismsbywhichstudentsmayimproveacademic
achievementasaresultofincreasedphysicalactivitythroughphysicaleducationincludeincreased
arousalandreducedboredom,whichmayleadtoincreasedattentionspanandconcentration.Increased
activitylevelsmightalsoberelatedtoincreasedselfesteem,whichcouldbeexpectedtoimprove
classroombehavioraswellasacademicperformance(16).Lastly,physicalactivityisimportantforthe
mindtoreleasestresschemicals,tohavefun,tobehealthy,andtoreducethechancesofhealth
problems.

HighTechHighstructurestheirphysicalactivityasanoption.HTHdoesntrequirePE/PA,but
wedohaveelectivesthatgiveusanoptionforparticipatingin/outsideofourschoolforeveryhalfquarter
ofasemester.Wearethenallowedtochangeintoain/outsideelectivewhenitisthattime.FromwhatI
knowHTHschoolsdidhavemandatoryPE/PAbutsomepointintheyearsdisregardedthis.HTHfeels
thatthestudentspickhowtoleadtheirlifestyleinschool,andifweneedacademicsupport,orjustdon't
wanttodoaPAduringschool,thenwecanfindthetimeoutofschooltoparticipateinPA.Pg.1,Yet
advocatesforschoolbasedphysicalactivityprogramsarguethatallocatingtimefordailyPEdoesnot
adverselyimpactacademicperformanceandthatregularexercisemayimprovestudentsconcentration
andcognitivefunctioning.36TherearebenefitsanddrawbackswiththisstructureofHTH.Onemain
benefitswithhowHTHstructurestheirPE/PAwouldbethat,weasstudentsarelearningtobeawareof
whatweneedinlifetoachievegoalsandsuccessiftheymeansparticipatinginacademiccoaching,
and/orgoingtoofficehours.SomedrawbackswouldbethelackofPAwhichcanleadto
being/containingthesameormoreamountofstress,notbeingfitandhealthy,lackofconfidence,lackof
awarenessoftheworldaroundyou,anddecreasescoreonphysicalfitnesstest.

NonHighTechHighSchoolsstructuretheirPE/PAdifferently.ManyschoolsrequirePAintheir
scheduleforeverygrade.Theyfeelthatstudentscangetapositiveoutlookofacademics,presentlife,
andfuturelifestyle.Therearebenefitsanddrawbacksinthiskindofschoolstructure.Somebenefitsare,
theyfeelthattheneedofPAhelpswithbuildingconfidence,increaseintestscores,awareness,manage
withstress/behavioriscontrolledbetter,andimprovementonstudentssociallylife.Lastly,some
drawbackswouldbewhenstudentsthatwanttofocusonjustacademics,andnothingelse,some
studentstakecontroloftheirPAtimetostudyandignoreexercisingandlearning.Italsotakesahouror
lessoftimeoutoftheschoolday,whichsomeparentsandstudentsdon'tfeelcomfortableabout.Pg.1,
Only36percentofhighschoolstudentsmeetthecurrentrecommendedlevelsofphysicalactivity.7

GoalsthatHTHcouldtakemovingforwardwouldbehavingrunningclubforelementaryschool,
havemandatoryPE/PAforMiddleSchoolandlastlyforHighSchooltohavePE/PAthatsmandatory.Ifa
studentneedssupportitshouldbeapprovedbytheteacheraswellasthedirectororprincipal.Another
goalwouldbetohaveoneclassofPEwithdifferentmedicalexpertseveryweekthatMiddleandHigh
Schoolshouldattend.HavingthiswillhavestudentsbecomemoreawareofPE/PF/PA.
