to get rid of the good parts as well as the bad parts of something when you are trying to improve it

Make a fresh start, change one's conduct or attitude for the better,

Neat and clean. A spick was a nail (as in spike), span was a wood shaving, and a new wooden
object had shiny spicks in it and fresh spans around it. Over the years the meaning of newness was
replaced by that of something fresh and clean (as a new object usually was).

to use someone's weakness to improve your own situation

also take full advantage (of something) to use an opportunity to get or achieve something

to tell people secret information

to behave towards someone in a way that is not at all friendly, sometimes for reasons that this
person does not understand
