Alcohol Intoxication

You came to the Emergency Department because you were intoxicated.

The legal limit for driving in the State of New York used to be 100 on this
scale, it is now down to 80. Please compare your level to the legal limit. A
level of 400 kills about half the people who reach it. Even 200 can be lethal
occasionally.
On the average, a person goes down by 25 mg per deciliter every hour. It
takes about 4 hours to go from 100 to nothing. Many people still feel bad
when the alcohol is back down to nothing because the alcohol can lead to
unpleasant shifts in your body fluids, including blood sugar, cellular water
and even lead to dehydration.
An alcoholic is someone who had a problem caused by or made worse by
drinking, and who does not modify their drinking accordingly. This
problem could be a simple as your spouse asking you not to drink and you
drink anyway, or it could be as serious as that you have gotten in trouble
with the law or your employer, and did not change your drinking habits.
Alcoholism is a serious medical illness whose treatment starts with the
person admitting that they cannot control their alcohol consumption
themselves. Once a person is aware that they cant do it alone, there are
many treatment options available.
AA is an effective option for many persons, and it is free.
