The challenge is to create your schools mascot out of recycled products. The product must be
made of significant amounts of recyclable materials that are found in a school and are on the
FCPS Recycles list.

Requirements:
Use recycled material at least 7 different types of materials.
If you do purchase anything to add to your structure, spend less than $30.
You will turn in:
A draft written plan or drawing of your initial design to recycling@fcps.edu by March 1, 2015.
Submission must include your school name and the name and email of an adult sponsor.
A typed, written description no longer than two pages including:
a list and description of materials used (including any costs);
a detailed description of the recycling process for the materials used in the structure;
description of the level of community involvement with the project
Your object. (Submitted along with item b and d at the NoVA Outside/GMU School
Environmental Action Showcase April 9, 2015)
A list of references used in preparation of any of the above.
Keep in mind that the figure must be able to be transported to George Mason University, Fairfax
to be judged so please build it in segments that are easily movable and can be put back together.
The Challenge:
Who: High school, Middle school, and, Elementary schools are welcome and will be
judged separately.
What: The FCPS Recycled Mascot Challenge
When: The contest will be held on April 9, 2015.
Where: The judging will take place at the NOVA Outside/ George Mason University
(GMU), Fairfax Center for the Performing Arts as part of the School Environmental
Action Showcase. At least one member of the construction team and an adult chaperone
must attend the Showcase for an entry to place and win a prize.
Why: The reason for this competition is to spread awareness about recycling to students,
teach them what can be recycled and to show that all people can make an impact and help
the world.
Prizes:
The prizes will be announced later. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for each individual division
(ES, MS and HS).
