Homework 4

Fall 2014

4.1 A PPMC instrument with a 900 coil resistance and an FSD of 75 A is to be used with
a halfwave rectifier circuit as an ac voltmeter. Silicon diodes are used, and the minimum
diode forward current is to be 80 A when the instrument indicates 0.25 FSD. Calculate the
shunt and multiplier resistance values required to give 200 V FSD.
4.2 A rectifier ammeter has the following components: PMMC instrument with FSD = 200 A
and Rm = 900 ; current transformer with Ns = 600 and Np = 500; diodes with VF = 0.3V ;
meter series resistance Rs = 270 k; transformer shunt secondary resistance RL = 98.7 k.
Calculate the level of transformer primary current for instrument FSD.
4.3 An ac voltmeter uses a bridge rectifier with silicon diodes and a PMMC instrument with
F SD = 75 A. If the meter coil resistance is 900 and the multiplier resistor is 708 k.
(a) Calculate the applied rms voltage when the voltmeter indicates FSD.
(b) Determine the new multiplier resistance required for the voltmeter to change its range
to 300 V F SD.
(c) Calculate the sensitivity of the ac voltmeter.
