When I first moved here, another pastor

warned me, Watch out! People here feel
very depressed in winter because of the
cold, gray days. He mentioned seasonal
affective disorder (SAD), a form of depression triggered by more limited exposure to
daylight.
I thought, Everyone feels sad or has the
blues from time to time. Mood swings are
normal reactions to lifes struggles, or disappointments. It cant be that bad. But he
is right. Winters here can make us feel
down in the dumps, or can cause a full
blown depression that makes us feel lifeless, empty, and apathetic. Depression can
interfere with the ability to work, study, eat,
sleep, and have fun. The feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and worthlessness
can be intense and unrelenting. You might
feel anger, loss of energy, reckless, have
trouble concentrating, or have unexplained
aches and pains.

Several people in our congregation have
had losses of various kinds, and there are
special times which bring unexplainable
sadness and even tears or depression.
The best approach to healing generally involves a combination of a strong support
system, prayer, lifestyle changes, and building emotional skills. In some cases, medication or professional help may be needed.

Isolation fuels depression, so it is important to reach out to others, even when

SUNDAY WORSHIP AT 10:30 A.M.

We took a church-wide survey in November
to determine what time most people would
prefer to worship this winter. The majority
said that of the options offered, they would
prefer to have one worship service at 10:30,
with Sunday school at 9:30. We intend to

resume having two worship services after

Easter, at 9:00 and 11:00. Thank you to those
who participated in the survey for carefully
considering the impact of this change on our
church.

INCLEMENT WEATHER CLOSINGS

Church meetings will be cancelled if the entire school
day is cancelled or if school is released early. If there is
a delay and not a cancellation, the event will most likely
be held. Please call the church to confirm. In the case
of inclement weather on a Sunday, we hope to put out

a phone tree message early enough that everyone is notified of cancellations. We will also put a message on
the church phone to announce closings. We have contracted to have the parking lots scraped if we have
events at the church following inclement weather.

Please send celebratory messages which reflect our members talents and contributions to our church and our
community to Ashley at jeffersonumc@skybest.com or drop your items in the office mailbox.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS!
Maranda and Brian Thompson and their
sons Caleb and Grant expect to add a new
little one to their family in mid-summer.
Maranda is our Director of Children,
Youth and Families.

Ashley and Alex Church and their son

Sawyer expect to be joined by a baby later
in the summer. Ashley is our Administrative Assistant.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE WINDOWS

The Stories Behind the Windows are biographical sketches of the men and women in whose
memory windows have been placed in our
church. The lives of these dedicated Christians
cover many years from the early 1800s until
the 1970s. Each story tells of devotion to and
love for this church, and those of us who feel the
same love can be thankful for their lives. They
helped make our church what it is today.

Sharing the Love of Jesus

Our youth made the decision to sponsor a 15 year old from Ecuador
named Karen Estefania Mazzini Diaz. Karen lives with her mom and three
other siblings. Karens responsibilities in the home include washing clothes,
making beds and helping in the kitchen. In her free time, she enjoys playing basketball, soccer and singing. Her favorite class is Bible class and she
looks forward to Vacation Bible School each year. Please remember Karen in your prayers. The love and support our church can give her will
help her grow and develop in all the ways necessary.
This sponsorship is done through Compassion International. Compassion
has partnered with Karens local Christ-centered church to help carry out
a holistic child development program designed specifically for Karen. The
pastor, staff and volunteers are able to provide a safe haven for her and
the other children attending the center. With the monetary help we provide, the centers are able to offer a safe, nurturing haven for Karen and
others. They are surrounded by loving Christian adults who give them the
freedom to learn, grow, play and dream of a future free from poverty.

Karen Estefania Mazzini Diaz

Born 14, 1999

In addition to the monthly amount of $38, our youth committed to write letters and pray for Karen. We
chose to sponsor Karen because no matter the distance or circumstance, there is no better way to
change a life, than giving opportunity and sharing the love of Jesus. Just making the decision to help
Karen has already changed my life.

DUKE ENDOWMENT GRANT APPLICATION IN

PROCESS FOR THE FOOD PANTRY
Our church has applied for a grant of $60,000 over three years to
assist with the purchase of food for the food pantry. Our goal is to
make it possible to serve clients once a month instead of once every
other month. Karen Miller and Karen Cooper met with a representative from the Duke Endowment in December, and the grant
will be processed this month. The money for the first year will be
available in early summer if the grant is approved. Please join us in
praying for this grant to be approved so that we can expand the
church's ability to provide food for Ashe County residents.

In partnership with Ashe Ministerial Association and Ashe Baptist
Association, Mission HeartStart
has invited our church to be one
of the first to receive a free Automatic External Defribrillator and
store it at our church. We have at
least 30 people willing to learn to
use of the AED, chest compression and other emergency
measures. Trainees must be at
least 16 years of age, but there is

no maximum age. Participants do

not have to be in our church, but
they do need to register so enough
materials will be available.
We appreciate all of those who
have signed up to be trained to use
the AED device. Training will be
on Saturday, March 7, 9:00-12:00
in our fellowship hall. Please
sign up on the sheet in the narthex
if you are willing to be trained.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT
SUPPER
Wednesday Nights are Fellowship
Nights at Jefferson UMC. A delicious
meal is served from 5:15 to 6:15 for
anyone who wishes to come. The meal
is $5 per person or a maximum of $20
per family. The meal is prepared by
Jacky Brown with consideration for
children, youth and adults. There are
musical rehearsals for our children and
adult choirs and youth group following
the meal, but families and individuals
who are not participating in music are
welcome to come.
PLEASE NOTE: If weather cancels school or requires an early release, the Wednesday meal and all
programming will also be cancelled.

NOTES FROM THE

WORSHIP COMMITTEE
Thanks to everyone who has signed up
to serve as ushers and provide flowers
for the altar for the coming year! We
still need others to volunteer, so please
consider serving as an usher or a liturgist in 2015. Call the church office
(846-9512) to add your name to service
in these important ministries.
If you are placing flowers on the altar,
please remember to keep the arrangements low enough to allow the cross to
remain visible and the focus of our attention.
We look forward to helping Pastor Karen provide meaningful worship experiences for our congregation in the
coming year.

Walking by Faith Womens Bible Study

A womens Bible study will be offered on Wednesday mornings, 9-11, in the Morphew House. The study includes a weekly video entitled Walking by Faith, discussion and a workbook for students to purchase. The facilitator is Loyce Horan.
The study will begin February 4th.
About the Walking by Faith
Jennifer Rothschild knows not everyone sees 20/20. Although
Jennifer is physically blind, God has taught her to see that living a life based on faith rather than sight requires us to look at
our situations through a lens that filters out what is seen and,
instead, focuses on what is unseen -- those things that are eternal.
Walking by Faith: Lessons Learned in the Dark contrasts the
evidences of walking by faith and walking by sight and encourages participants to take risks, give God control, persevere
through hardship, receive God's gifts, be guided by the Truth
rather than feelings, and seek God.

God grant me the serenity

to accept the things
I cannot change;
the courage to change
the things I can;
and the wisdom
to know the difference.
