Here, Morrison immediately places
writers and their power on a
pedestal. Writers have power which
would be unwise for totalitarian
regimes to allow to roam free. This
sets the tone of this essay and the
direction from which she addresses
writers: Being powerful beings. Why
does she do this however? What
time period is this written and why
would she feel compelled to place
writers on this pedestal?
This simile is preceded by the idea
that writers can disrupt this restless
sleep and rouse people into the real
world of truth.
The syntax makes this essay flow
like a speech. Commas and long
sentences imitate the natural flow
of the human mind, releasing
thoughts like long strings. It makes
this essay that much more powerful
and appealing to the reader.
The effect of this technique is a
build of suspense which I believe
Morrison uses to emphasize just
how important the topic she
describes truly is.

By appealing to the reader as one

and the same with the author, and
then bringing the reader into the
essay through the use of the 1st
person, Morrison brings meaning to
the need for writers as a part of life.
This relates the protecting of writers
