CHAPTER 3: FORCES AND PRESSURE

Extra Questions

1. A cube of side 0.25 m and weight 600 N is placed on a horizontal surfaces. What pressure
does it produce on the surface?
2. Over what area must a thrust of 80 N act in order to exert a pressure of
(a) 250 N m-2,
(b) 400 N m-2.

A man stands on both feet produces a pressure of 12 000 N m-2 on the ground. Each foot of
the man has an area of 2.50 10-2 m2 in contact with the ground. Take the gravitational
acceleration g as 10 m s-2.
(a) What is the mass of the man?
(b) Find the pressure exerted by the man on the ground if he stands on the foot.

A car has a weight of 18 000 N, and the pressure of air in each of the four tyres is 3.0 105 N
m-2. Find the area of each tyre in contact with the ground if the weight of the car is equally
distributed over the four wheels.

A drawing pin is pushed into wood by pressing with the thumb which exerts a steady force
of 14 N. The areas of the pin-point and the pin- head are 3.5 10-7 m2 and 4.0 10-5 m2
respectively.
(a) What is the pressure at the point of the pin?
(b) Find also the pressure exerted on the thumb pressing the pin.

A rectangular block 0.09 m 0.05 m 0.12 m with a weight of 54 N rests on a horizontal

surface. Calculate maximum and minimum pressures that the block can exert on the surface.

A persons lung can exert a pressure of 1.122 105 N m-2. What is the maximum weight that
the person can blow up using a vertical cylinder fitted with a piston of area 0.006 m2. Take
the atmospheric pressure as 1 105 N m-2.

A moistened rubber sucker is pressed against a vertical flat surface. It then becomes attached
firmly to the surface.
(a) Explain why.
(b) If the atmospheric pressure is 1 105 N m-2 and the area of the sucker in contact with the
surface is 9.6 10-4 m2, find the minimum horizontal force required to remove the
sucker. ( Neglect the force due to surface tension)
