About 500,000 years ago, Boxgrove in West

Sussex, UK, was the site of a tidallagoon, beach,
and limestone cliffs. Excavations in a local quarry
led by archaeologist Mark Roberts revealed a rich
record of early hominin occupation. Acheulean
artifacts, including very finely knapped handaxes,
were found in association with mammals such as
horses, giant deer, and rhinoceroses, which may
have been hunted while they visited the lagoon .
Two lower incisors and a parta! shin bone provide
evidence of the hominin colonizers themselves.

This sh in bone of an
adult male, found in
1993, is ascribed to
H. heidefbergensis.
