Safely through the cold season: Mercedes-Benz partners offer
winter wheel/tyre combinations that are specifically
configured for the relevant vehicle model they can be
recognised by the Mercedes-Benz genuine wheel and tyres with
the marking MO (Mercedes Original) or MOE (Mercedes Original
Extended with run-flat capability) on the tyre wall. Up to
50 parameters must be met before a tyre receives the MO or
MOE seal of quality as a Mercedes-Benz genuine tyre. The
Mercedes-Benz partners will
also take care of fitting and store the summer wheel/tyre
combinations for customers on request.
Everything on board: Whether skis, sledges or snowboards
sports equipment will reach the destination safely and easily
with the roof carriers and roof boxes individually configured
for all models. All roof-mounted transport solutions are based on
the roof carriers from the Alustyle series.

Winter wheel/tyre combinations
Safely through the cold season

Mercedes-Benz partners offer winter wheel/tyre
combinations that are specifically configured for the
relevant vehicle model - they will also take care of fitting
and take the summer wheel/tyre combinations into storage
on request.
They can be recognised by the Mercedes-Benz genuine wheel and
tyres with the marking MO (Mercedes Original) or MOE (Mercedes
Original Extended) on the tyre wall. The wheel/tyre combinations
marked MOExtended have run-flat capabilities: Even with a flat
tyre, it is possible to continue driving for up to
80 kilometres at a maximum of 80 km/h1. The vehicle will also
remain on course in the event of a sudden pressure loss, making a
wheel-change unnecessary in hazardous circumstances.
In close cooperation with leading tyre manufacturers, and
according to stringent test criteria, Mercedes-Benz develops
tyres that are perfectly configured for its vehicle models. Up to
50 parameters must be met before a tyre receives the MO or
MOE seal of quality as a Mercedes-Benz genuine tyre. The
wheel/tyre combinations are also fitted in Mercedes-Benz quality
and perfectly balanced for optimum ride comfort. Advantages of

Why winter tyres are indispensable during the cold

season
Shorter braking distances, better acceleration, better cornering:
winter tyres simply do things better in cold, snowy and icy
conditions. This is because only winter tyres have a special,
cold-compatible rubber mixture with a high proportion of silicon,
which keeps the tyre supple even in low temperatures. The
softer the rubber mixture, the better it adapts to the road
surface. The result: more grip when braking, accelerating and
cornering. Summer tyres harden in the cold, however, which
reduces their grip on the road. Even the very latest driver
assistance systems are powerless in this case.
The safety advantages of winter tyres are particularly impressive
when braking: an average car with winter tyres needs a braking
distance of around 31 metres to come to a stop on a snowcovered road from 50 km/h. With summer tyres the braking
distance increases to 62 metres. This doubling of the braking
distance has very serious consequences: in an emergency, the car
with summer tyres would still impact an obstacle at 22 km/h while
the car with winter tyres would have come to a stop. This is why
all-wheel drive vehicles such as SUVs must have winter tyres as
well.
When accelerating on snow, winter tyres are vastly superior:
whatever the drive system, they provide up to 80 percent more

traction. This not only helps brisk acceleration from traffic-lights,

but also allows rapid evasive action when escaping from a
hazardous situation for example at the end of a traffic tailback.
The improved grip when cornering can prevent the car from
leaving the road or skidding into oncoming traffic.
The special tread pattern meshes the winter tyre into the snow or
ice-covered road surface, creating a high shearing effect which
improves grip even further. Numerous vanes in the tread blocks
increase the effective lateral edge length, and therefore also the
grip.
Winter tyres have become obligatory in more countries
since 2012
Winter tyres are absolutely mandatory or required according to
the given weather conditions in many European countries. In
2012 the requirement was also introduced in Luxembourg and

Transport solutions
Everything on board
Skis, sledges or snowboards sports equipment will
reach the destination safely and easily with the roof
carriers and roof boxes individually configured for all
models. All roof-mounted transport solutions are based
on the roof carriers from the Alustyle series.
Installed in seconds, completely without tools: that is the
innovative advantage of the basic "Alustyle Quickfix" carrier
generation, which Mercedes-Benz Accessories offers for the
models in the compact class (A-Class, B-Class, CLA). The
innovative quick-fastening system is very easy to operate and
requires no tools whatsoever. The lockable plastic caps are an
effective deterrent to theft. The prerequisite for the
development of "Alustyle Quickfix" was close collaboration
between the accessories developers and the body specialists
and designers of the new compact models: four attachment
points are easily accessible and firmly integrated into the roof
structure.
The carrier rails of the "Alustyle Easy-Fix II" generation, which
is available e.g. for the current models of the M-Class, the GL
and the GLK, are just as easy to install. These also require just a
few simple steps, namely pre-tensioning until a click is heard,
then tensioning by engaging the attachment lever, which can be
easily performed by anyone without tools. The Alustyle basic
carrier
is tailor-made for the saloons, estates and coups from the CClass to the
S-Class.

Other important criteria when designing all the carrier systems

in the genuine accessories range included optimisation of the
aerodynamics and noise characteristics, as well as crash testing,
which at Mercedes-Benz goes well beyond the legal
requirements. All components of the carrier systems also meet
particularly high requirements with respect to operational
stability and a long service life.

Ski and snowboard carriers: Safe roof-mounted transport

Mercedes-Benz offers two carrier variants for transporting winter
sports equipment on the roof: The ski and snowboard carrier
New Alustyle "Standard" is designed for up to four pairs of skis
or two pairs of snowboards. The "Comfort" version is able to
carry up to six pairs of skis or four snowboards. As a special
feature, this version has a useful pull-out function that makes
loading and unloading easier.
Both carrier systems have been tested to stringent MercedesBenz standards. For anti-theft protection they are also lockable.
Alternatively there are the large roof boxes, which are able to
hold up to six pairs of skis or four snowboards safely and out of
the weather.

Roof boxes: A second luggage compartment for the

winter holiday
Practical functionality, an elegant design and a generous
transport capacity distinguish the range of genuine roof boxes
from Mercedes-Benz. The robust luggage boxes of high-quality
plastic are available in three sizes with a capacity of 330, 400 or
450 litres. The boxes can be opened and closed from either side
with the help of gas-pressure struts. Valuable contents are
securely held in place with the tensioning straps included as
standard. A further benefit: the 3-bolt system on the lockable
luggage boxes provides effective
anti-theft protection.
The roof boxes can be installed without tools, and if necessary
by one person. This is facilitated by a convenient sliding
attachment feature and the low weight of the boxes. The basis
for fixing the luggage boxes in place is the "Alustyle" roof carrier
system tailor-made precisely for the body structure of most
Mercedes-Benz passenger cars.
All the roof boxes offer a high level of safety in the event of an
accident. They are TV- and "City Crash"-tested, and also meet
Mercedes-Benz standards, which go well beyond the legal
requirements.
Amazing space: the Roof Box 450
The Mercedes-Benz Roof Box 450 is the space champion among
the portable luggage boxes available in the genuine accessories
range of Mercedes-Benz Accessories. The roof box weighs
approx. 19 kg and has a payload of
75 kilograms, giving the user plenty of individual scope for
holidays and recreational use. Its capacity of 450 litres
corresponds to the capacity of a
C-Class boot, its dimensions are 220 x 80 x 40 cm. This box has

sufficient space for the winter sports equipment of a family of

four, for example.
Six metal eyelets for the attachment of tensioning straps secure
the contents of the box inside. Anodised aluminium strips on
both sides make opening and closing easier.
The t-blocks with which the box is attached in the t-slot of the
roof carrier have been improved. Only a few turns are now
required to fasten the box to the roof carrier, and the wing nuts
are now permanently attached to the box so that they cannot be
lost or mislaid. This is a response by Mercedes-Benz Accessories
to a frequent customer request.
The design of the roof box with its "dropping line" reflects the
current Mercedes-Benz design idiom. In addition to the classic
colour matt silver with slight grain-effect surface, the box is also
available in metallic black. Accessory items specifically
developed and designed to fit the interior dimensions of the box
ensure even more versatility and holiday pleasure. One example
is the practical six-piece set of fitted bags. Consisting of four
spacious bags and two separate ski bags, this provides optimum
protection and transport convenience for four pairs of skis and
any other travelling and sports equipment. Particularly userfriendly: in inclement weather the fitted bags can be
conveniently filled in the home. The design of the bags is
typically
Mercedes-Benz, using hard-wearing and water-repellent
material.
Thanks to shoulder-straps included in the set, the bags can also
be used anywhere outside the box. Another useful accessory for
roof boxes is the
ski-holder insert, which will securely hold up to five pairs of skis.

The multifunction box: Roof Box 400

The Roof Box 400 has the same elegant design and practical
advantages as the Roof Box 450, but its dimensions are
specifically tailored to the more compact vehicle models. It has a
capacity of 400 litres, a width of 70 cm, a height of 40 cm and a
length of only 190 cm: this means that the tailgate of the AClass and the GLA can also be opened when the Roof Box 400 is
installed. Purpose-designed handle strips 80 cm in length made
from anodised extruded aluminium profile make opening and
closing easier, while preventing the lid from skewing when
closing. The multifunction box can also be installed on other
vehicles, of course. The box has a weight of approx. 16 kg.
A set of made-to-measure bags is also available for the Roof Box
400. It consists of three bags plus a ski-bag for two pairs of skis
with a maximum length of 170 cm. The ski-bag is also available
separately.
The sports box: Roof Box 330
With its capacity of approx. 330 litres, the sports box provides
additional luggage space equivalent to that of the compact
class. It is available in matt silver. A set of fitted bags consisting
of four bags and a ski/holder insert for up to three pairs of skis is
also available for this box as an optional accessory. The box
itself weighs approx. 14 kg, and has a payload of 50 kg. An
advantage of the sports box: depending on the vehicle, there is
room for a roof-mounted ski/snowboard carrier or a bicycle
carrier next to the box. The dimensions of the Roof Box 330 are
220 x 60 x 41 cm.
Safe and durable thanks to extreme test procedures
Carrier and roof-mounted systems from Mercedes-Benz ensure
the high level of safety and long-term durability for which the

brand is known. The tests conducted before a product enters the

market are correspondingly extensive.
A brief overview of the exacting test procedures:
The in-house crash tests at Mercedes-Benz are conducted at
higher speeds and rates of acceleration than are required by the
DIN 75-302 and ISO 11154 standards or the "City Crash". The
latter is called for by the consumer organisation "Stiftung
Warentest" and the motorist organisation "ADAC", but is not a
legal requirement. This test is supposed to simulate a typical
rear-end collision in an urban setting at a moderate speed.
During tests on the so-called "vibration table" or in the body
testing unit the roof and carrier are subjected to extremely
violent shaking. These laboratory tests are supplemented with
extensive driving tests on test tracks, and in situations
simulating real traffic conditions. For example, the special road
endurance test is carried out over a distance of 25,000
kilometres, with a 50% overload of the carrier.
The in-house corrosion tests on individual components in salt
water spray booths take twice as long as specified by the DIN
75-302 standard. In addition the products are subjected to longterm corrosion tests on the vehicle, and to extreme
temperatures in the climate chamber.

Bone-chilling cold, glistening snow and brilliant sunshine
everybody's dream of a fine winter's day. But often
these are interspersed with murky weather where slush
or drizzle are the order of the day. In these unpleasant
conditions Mercedes-Benz genuine accessories protect
both driver and vehicle from soiling, while loading
systems ensure a tidy luggage compartment.
Those living in regions where there is persistent snow, or who
regularly drive into the mountains for winter sports, greatly
appreciate the precisely fitted Classic all-weather mats
available from Mercedes-Benz for most model series. These are
made from robust, washable plastic for extremely hard wear, and
reliably protect the high-quality footwell carpeting thanks to a
recessed area and raised edges. The mats are secured against
slipping by the Mercedes-Benz fastening system.
Boot tubs made from impact-resistant polypropylene provide
the same protection, e.g. against snow melting from ski-boots.
These are likewise available for many Mercedes-Benz model
series, and feature a honeycomb structure to fix the separately
available stowage box in place. Some of the tubs also allow
useful Velcro fastening of the concertina rear sill protector.
This protects the rear area against scratches during loading
and clothing against dirt on the vehicle.
To make sure that nothing slides around during the winter
holiday journey, and that the luggage compartment is always
tidy, Mercedes-Benz offers various compartment systems. These
include a plug-in module with a telescopic rod that enables the
boot to be flexibly subdivided to prevent items from sliding

about. The stowage box is available for all model series and is
intended as an addition to the shallow boot tub. This securely
holds items that might tip over or slide about, and can be
subdivided into up to four sections thanks to adjustable divisions.
The comfort box2has a particularly large capacity2 and can be
collapsed beneath the parcel shelf on a rail system when not in
use. The useful concertina bags of robust, washable woven
nylon securely hold shopping or winter sports accessories.
The cupholders for the stowage compartment in the centre
console are particularly useful on longer journeys. They are able
to hold up to two drinks in different-sized containers.

Reaching the winter sport destination by the shortest
route while avoiding tailbacks is made possible by
advanced telematic solutions that can be retrofitted for
many model series. Entertainment systems for the rear
ensure that kids also have fun on the journey.
Together with the Digital DriveStyle app specially developed by
Daimler, the Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone 3 allows seamless
integration of an iPhone. Highlights include Siri voice control
and an advanced navigation function from Garmin , Google
Online POI search including Street View and 3D map display.
Additional functions include Facebook , Twitter, internet radio,
AUPEO! Personal Radio and real-time position sharing with
Glympse. Glympse enables the user to share his or her current
location with selected persons.
Numerous multimedia functions are combined by the MercedesBenz telephone module with Bluetooth (SAP)4. Featuring an
integrated UMTS module connected directly to the vehicle's
exterior aerial, the telephone module provides COMAND Online
with a fast, stable and secure internet connection. At the same
time as making phone calls, it is possible to use Mercedes-Benz
apps, for example.The driver can have short messages read out.
The Becker MAP PILOT is a low-cost navigation function for
Audio 20 CD.
Its advantages include integrated operation via the central
control unit, voice input of the destination, voice output via the
on-board loudspeakers and display on the Audio 20 screen, a

concealed location in the glove compartment and the option of

purchasing updates and additional services via an online portal.
With the docking station iPad Rear Integration Plus, the
Apple tablet PC models iPad, iPad 2, 3 and 4 with all the
familiar functions can be ergonomically accommodated in the
rear where they will be safe in a crash. All connections, e.g. for
the headphones, remain accessible. The holding bracket can be
tilted and rotated by 90 degrees. In addition, the battery of the
iPad can be charged via an integrated USB interface, using the
charging cable.
Portable iPad rear integration is available as an alternative.
This holder is likewise suitable for the iPad , iPad 2, 3 and 4,
and is simply attached to the head restraint struts. This means
that it can be removed at any time.
First-class entertainment in the rear is also provided by the Rear
Seat Entertainment System, which is available as a portable
kit, a permanently integrated kit or a retrofitted optional extra,
depending on the model series. This brings DVD videos,
favourite photos and even video games onto two brilliant 17.8
cm colour screens, without disturbing the driver or restricting
the view to the rear. The option of separate video playback on
the two monitors allows different programmes to be watched,
thanks to separate DVD players. The system is supplied with two
infrared headphones and radio remote control.

Sophisticated design, a high-quality finish, intelligent
use of space and numerous practical details distinguish
the suitcases and bags in the Mercedes-Benz Collection,
which have been developed together with experts such
as Samsonite or Deuter. With these luggage items, even
packing forms part of the holiday.
The suitcases in the Firelite Spinner range, which are produced
for
Mercedes-Benz by Samsonite, are robust yet lightweight travel
companions. They are made from a thermoplastic composite
material named Curv. Their features include low-positioned,
elastic cross straps in the lower section, padded dividers in the
upper section, smooth and quiet rollers, and a three-piece TSA
lock. The charcoal-coloured cases are available in two sizes: as
the Firelite Spinner 55 (suitable as carry-on luggage, dimensions
approx.
40 x 55 x 20 cm, weight approx. 1.95 kg), price 339.90 5, and

Whether for a weekend trip or a skiing holiday, there is a suitable

Dressed for the part in the biting cold and at aprs-ski
parties: the Mercedes-Benz Collection has stylish fashion
items and practical accessories for ladies and gentlemen.
Men are well-equipped for winter walks and snowball fights with
the anthracite-coloured scarf and matching knitted hat in 100
percent wool. The scarf (180 x 40 cm, 79.90) has a woven-in
chequered pattern in black and anthracite, and features fringes

Confident and assured on ice and snow

Icy patches, emergency braking or sudden evasive action
on slippery roads in critical winter situations it is
important to keep a cool head and control the vehicle
with confidence. The winter training courses offered by
Mercedes-Benz Driving Events are specifically aimed at
this, and instil intuitive, confident reactions at the wheel.
With the reassuring feeling of being in the hands of experienced
instructors, the participants practice in the breathtaking winter
landscapes of Austria, Sweden or Finland using vehicles provided
from the Mercedes-Benz model range to explore their personal
limits.
Here is an overview of the various driving safety training courses
and driving events being held by Mercedes-Benz in winter
2013/2014:
Basic Training Austria: On this one-day course at the
Austrian driving skills centre in Saalfelden with its specially
prepared slopes, participants learn how to react if the
vehicle starts to skid, and how to brake correctly on icy
surfaces. The exercises include slalom-driving, braking on
bends and under/oversteering; participants are also
familiarised with the assistance systems. Price: 595.00

Advanced Training Austria: With exciting exercises such

traffic tailback. The main aim of the 2.5 km long handling
circuit on ice is sheer driving pleasure: using spiked tyres,
the participants practice keeping the vehicle in a continuous

sometimes five-day training course takes place in Lapland,

test on tracks designed by the Formula 1 racetrack architect
Hermann Tilke. The training is rounded off by a snowmobile
tour, an aperitive in the Igloo ice-bar and a trip in the rally

video analyses and a lap timer, the instructors analyse and

with a trip in the rally taxi, with professional drivers at the

High-performance experiences with the AMG Driving Academy
The pleasure of driving performance

The participants of the AMG Winter Sporting enjoy pure driving
pleasure on vast ice and snow surfaces behind the wheel of AMG
vehicles. On the Lungauring in Austria and in the Arctic Circle, in
north-west Arjeplog, they can expect to find ideal conditions for
improving and perfecting ones driving ability in the harshest
winter conditions. They will also be able to enjoy breathtaking
nature and the cosy atmosphere of the exclusive AMG lodge.
AMG Winter Sporting BASIC: Against the backdrop of a
breathtaking winter landscape, participants can experience

the proverbial driving performance of high-performance

automobiles on specially prepared ice- and snow-covered
surfaces. In 2014, the AMG Driving Academy is adding a
further skill level to its existing winter driving programme.
The AMG Winter Sporting BASIC programme, held over one
and a half days on the Lungauring near Salzburg in Austria,
is ideally suited to the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG. The
technical set-up is ideal: the new AMG models feature an
AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine with an
output of 265 kW (360 hp) and 450 newton metres of
torque, along with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC
all-wheel-drive system. Alongside the special driving
experience provided by AMG Winter Sporting BASIC, the
focus of this programme is, above all, on safety: Participants
are able to work individually on developing their vehicle
control skills and to enhance their active driving safety.

provided in Swedish Lapland, acquiring valuable experience
