Thomas Stone boys basketball defeats Lackey

Senior guard Taylor has career night, paces Cougars to blowout victory over Chargers
By AJ Mason Staff Writer
After Thomas Stones Darnell Taylor drained his first three-pointer early in the first
quarter, every shot attempt began to feel good when it left his hand in Friday nights
Southern Maryland Athletic Conference boys basketball contest versus visiting
Lackey.

With Stone up eight points after the first, the senior point guard spearheaded an 110 run with hot shooting in the first three minutes of the second quarter, nailing three
straight three-pointers, en route to the eventual 78-41 victory over the Chargers.
Taylor finished with a career-high 18 points, which led all scorers, scoring 12 points
in the first half. He shot 7 of 9 from the field, including 4 for 4 from beyond the arc in
the county affair. He also had six assists and two steals in the game.

I knew it was going to be a good night because my teammates found me when I

was open, said Taylor, who is in his second season on varsity, first as a starter. That was the best shooting game Ive ever had. After that
North Point loss [63-62 on Jan. 10], weve gotten stronger on defense, so tonight was a good win.
I could tell that he was going to be aggressive with his shot tonight and I see him in practice all the time. He is capable of getting hot and can
shoot, Stone head coach Dale Lamberth said. He didnt force anything and had a good floor game. He has a good stroke and good range on
his shot.
The Cougars (5-4, 3-0 SMAC), who won 74-68 in overtime at Huntingtown on Thursday to make up a Jan. 14 postponement, outscored
Lackey 21-6 in the second quarter and 22-7 in the third to blow the game wide open.
Not only did Stone force turnovers with its disruptive defense, but it was very unselfish on offense, collecting 22 assists, 14 in the first half.
We watched Lackey on film and knew their guards could score and their inside guys were solid, Lamberth said. So our focus tonight was
defense, and we just played hard and smart. We wanted to control the tempo and thats what we did.

Lavon Randall and Isaiah Fluker finished with nine and eight points,
respectively.
You never expect a win of that big of a margin, but we just stuck to our game
plan and that is what led to the end result, Darrell Lamberth said. Our defense
was remarkable tonight and our goal is to hold a team to under 10 points a
quarter and we did that. We are starting to progress and the light bulb is starting
to come on for us.
Darrell Lamberth added, We give it to the hot man and we feed him and tonight
was Darnells night.
Lackey (6-4, 0-3), which lost its fourth straight contest, did not have a scorer in
double figures as senior Benard Douglas finished with seven points, while Kelvin
Jordan and Jordan Wood added six points each.
