HOW TO SOLVE CUBIC AND QUARTIC

EQUATION
CUBIC EQUATION
Some cubic equations are easy to factor. Otherwise it can be difficult.
However, if a rational root exists, there is a way to find it.
Given cubic equation: ax^3 + bx^2 + cx + d = 0
Let p = factor of constant term (d)
Let q = factor of leading coefficient (a)
Then if a rational root exists, it will have form: p/q
Once you have a real root, you now have one of the factors of polynomial. You can now use polynomial
division or synthetic division to find quadratic factor. Then finding remaining two roots is fairly simple.
Example:
4x^3 - 20x^2 + 27x - 6 = 0
p = factor of -6 .... p = 1, 2, 3, 6
q = factor of 4 ..... q = 1, 2, 4
So if cubic equation has rational roots, it will be of the form:
p/q = 1, 2, 3, 6, 1/2, 2/2, 3/2, 6/2, 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 6/4
Simplifying and eliminating duplicates, we get
p/q = 1, 2, 3, 6, 1/2, 3/2, 1/4, 3/4
So trying each of these, we find x = 2 is a root, so (x - 2) is a factor
We use synthetic to find (4x^3 - 20x^2 + 27x - 6) / (x - 2)
2 | .. 4 ... -20 .. 27 .. -6
.. | ........... 8 .. -24 ... 6
.. --------------------------....... 4 .. -12 ... 3 ..... 0
So (4x^3 - 20x^2 + 27x - 6) / (x - 2) = 4x^2 - 12x + 3
So cubic equation becomes:
(4x^3 - 20x^2 + 27x - 6) = 0
(x - 2) (4x^2 - 12x + 3) = 0
You can easily find remaining roots using quadratic formula.
This gives: x = 2, (3 6)/2
