This Week in 6th Grade Math

This week, students will learn how to model and write equivalent expressions using the distributive property.
Example 1: Use GCF and the distributive property to write equivalent expressions.

6x + 9y = ________________
The GCF is 3. I will factor out the 3 from both terms and place it in front of the parentheses. I will place what is left in the terms
inside the parentheses. Answer: 6x + 9y = 3(2x + 3y)
Example 2: What is an equivalent expression that we can use to represent 2(3x + 4y)?
When there is a number outside the parentheses, I can multiply it by the terms on the inside.
Answer: 2(3x + 4y) = 6x + 8y
