Posed Question:
What ration of vinegar to baking soda will make just the right amount of foam to rise
to the top of the graduated cylinder without overflowing?

Hypothesis:

If I add ____________mL of baking soda to ____________mL of vinegar,

then a chemical reaction will produce foam that reaches the top of a graduated
cylinder without overflowing.

Materials

Vinegar in a cup
Baking soda in a cup
Detergent solution in a cup
Dropper
Graduated Cylinder ( 250 mL)
Measuring spoons
Tin waste catch container

Procedure
1. Decide on how much vinegar and baking soda you will use and write these
amounts in the chart below.
2. Use a graduated cylinder to measure the amount of vinegar your group agreed on.
3. Pour the vinegar in a small cup and add 1 drop of detergent. Swirl gently to mix.
4. Add the amount of baking soda your group agreed on to the empty graduated
cylinder.
5. Place the graduated cylinder in the tin waste catch container
6. Pour the vinegar and detergent from the cup into the graduated cylinder. Observe
the level of foam in the graduated cylinder.
7. Rinse the graduated cylinder in the sink.

Conclusion: Answer the following questions in complete sentences.

1. Was the experiment an example of an open system or a closed system? Explain
why.

2. How could the reaction between baking soda and vinegar be increased?

3. Explain why the temperature of the graduated changed when the baking soda and
vinegar were mixed together. What is this called?
