Note from the Teachers

Second Quarter ended in December and we are pleased
to report that students earned approximately 50 quarter
credits. It is always so rewarding and validating for us
to see those credits in print on a transcript.
Mrs. Williams recently attended a meeting with Robert
Austin, the Social Studies Specialist from the Utah State
Office of Education (USOE). In
the
meeting,
Mr.
Austin
announced that the USOE has
begun the process of reviving
the
Social
Studies
Core
Curriculum.
The
new
curriculum will be similar in
content, but the focus will
change to big idea and essential
question oriented objectives.
The new social studies core is not expected to roll out
for a few more years, but freshman students will most
likely still be in school for implementation.

What Were Learning!

Social Studies
In addition to regular coursework,
weve started to refocus on current
events media. More specifically,
our focus has been on civil
liberties and rights of the accused.
English
Since our last newsletter, one of our
students was paroled and left with
his high school diploma. To replace
him, we have a new student who is
getting into our routine.
He
arrived just in time to start a new
quarter and a new novel, an all-time

In addition to the novel, we are using

questions
and

to
enhance
our
understanding of what we read. We are
also continuing to work with Smart
Writing lessons to add improvement to
each students writing skills.
Science
Each student is working individually
in the area of science needed to
satisfy
his
requirement
for
graduation. We are using Grad Point as
much as possible to this end. The

USF Brings
Macbeth
to SWUYC

We currently have no students taking a

visual arts class, but we couldnt
stand going another month without
publishing
some
more
thoughtprovoking art from our talented
students. This project was created
several months ago by a student for
Drawing credit. He has since earned
his credit and has moved onto Music
Appreciation.

Actors and actresses visited the
Southwest Utah Youth Center from the
Utah Shakespearean Festival to perform
for us the timeless macabre tale of
Macbeth
. Filled with murder, tragedy
and loss, this play famously depicts
one couples thirst for power and their
willingness to betray and slaughter
friends and allies for the throne.
The USF brought lighting, props, and
costumes to make the experience as
realistic as possible. The play was
very good, said one student, their
acting was very well done and it still
amazes me how fast they switch
clothes. The actors expertly executed
their lines with
intensity
and
passion that the
audience
could
feel, making it an
experience that
will be talked
about for months
to come.

Volleyball Victory for

SWUYC Immortals
-written by a Foothill High
Student Correspondent
The day of the big game started on a
frosty
morning.
Five brave
warriors, the five most skillful
players at SWUYC, travelled far
across the land to Slate Canyon to
compete in an epic volleyball match.
When they arrived, they were face to
face with the very kids that had
previously brought them their
football downfall a few months ago.
The SWUYC Immortals had one thing on
their minds that morning: That
trophys coming home with us today!
As they set forth in the game, it
wasnt looking so well for the
Immortals and they lost their first
match. However, they werent going
down without a fight! As the match
went on they came out on top with the
victory of 5 wins out of 7 games.
