JUNCTURE

Juncture is a pause. The pause is


the transition of sounds.
There are two types of juncture
1.Close transition
2.Open transition

Close and Open Transition


Close transition is the absence, or
near absence, of a pause.
ahead /hed/
already / lredi/
Open transition refers to the short but
noticeable pause between words or
between parts of a compound.
a head / hed/
all ready /l redi/

Types of Juncture
1. The plus juncture
The plus juncture exists in between
words or parts of compound
2. The singlebar juncture Notation /l/
the single bar-juncture exists to
show the pause indicating that the
speaker is emphasizing words.
The examples are as follows:

1. Unmarked sentence: Your friends are interesting people.
Marked sentence :
Your friends are interesting /l/
people.
Your friends are /l/ interesting people.
2. Unmarked sentence: we need a modern linguistic course
Marked sentence
we need a /l/ modern linguistic
course.
we need a modern /l/ linguistic course.
2. Unmarked sentence: He asked for more love from her.
Marked sentence He asked for more /l/ love from her.
He asked for more love /l/ from her.

3. The double-bar juncture Notation /ll/
this juncture exists when we say some elements in a series
(with comma), and after introductory sentence elements.

unmarked sentence: one, two, three, four, five., ten


red, white, black, green, and blue.
a, b, c, d, e, f,
Yes, I understand
as soon as finished, he went home
Marked sentence:
one /ll/ two /ll/ three/ll/ four/l/ five.,
ten
red/ll/ white/ll/ black/ll/ green/ll/ and blue.
a/ll/ b /ll/ c /ll/ d /ll/ e /ll/ f,
Yes /ll/ I understand
As soon as finished /ll/ he went home

Types of Juncture
4. The double-plus or double-cross juncture Notation /#/
This juncture has the longest pause. We hear this pause at
the ends of sentences.
For example:
Unmarked sentences: His father died when he was ten. His
uncle
took him and brought him
up..
His father died when he was ten # His
uncle
took him and brought him up
#..

Features
Stress, Pitch, and Juncture are important to
teach/learn

1. The kind of sentence spoken


2. Something about emphasis
3. Something about relationship of
ideas. They help us detect which
elements in a grammatical string are
functionally related to each other.
