Culture Vocabulary

1. Culture- The beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time.
2. Beliefs- A feeling of being sure that someone or something exists, or that something is
true.
3. Preservation- To keep something in its original state or in good condition.
4. Legend- A story from the past that is believed by many people but cannot be proved to be
true.
5. Values- To think that someone or something is important or useful.
6. Stereotype- To believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic
are the same.
7. Language- The system of words or signs that people use to express thoughts and feelings
to each other.
8. Artifacts- A simple object (such as a tool or weapon) that was made by people in the
past.
9. Ethnicity- The fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or
cultural tradition.
10. Music- Sounds that are sung by voices or played on musical instruments.
11. Traditions- A way of thinking, behaving, or doing something that has been used by the
people in a particular group, family, society, etc., for a long time.
12. Anthropology- The study of human beings and their ancestors through time and in
relation to physical character, environmental and social relations, and culture.
13. Heritage- The traditions, achievements, beliefs, etc., that are part of the history of a
group or nation.
14. Ideals- Exactly right for a particular purpose, situation, or person.
15. Ethics- Rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally good and bad.
16. Conflict- Strong disagreement between people, groups, etc., that results in often angry
argument.
17. Adapt- To change your behavior so that it is easier to live in a particular place or
situation.
18. Cultural Geography- The study of how people use space and interact with their
environment.

19. Diversity- The state of having people who are different races or who have different
cultures in a group or organization.
20. Tolerance- Willingness to accept feelings, habits, or beliefs that are different from your
own.
21. Acceptance- The act of accepting something or someone.
22. Religion- An organized system of beliefs; an interest, a belief, or an activity that is very
important to a person or group.
23. Authentic- Real or genuine, not copied or false.
