Relationship between the school,

business/employer, and technical
training institute is very important

Registered Apprenticeship

For students who identify their career

interests & are ready to learn and practice
their trade while still in school
Rap students are both full-time students and
registered apprentices
Flexible and accessible for students
Students must complete all of the courses
pertaining to their apprenticeship pathway
Completion of apprenticeship pathway
earns credit towards year 1 hours

Questions

Why are apprenticeships important

within the CTS curriculum?

Why are they beneficial for students who

have an interest in trades?

Apprenticeship Pathways

Must be taught in Alberta Education

approved facilities
Courses must be taught by a
journeyperson for that trade
Individual Learning Modules (ILMs) are the
primary resource for the delivery of
instruction
ILMs are current, standardized material that
are used across the province by instructors

Certification Trades

Compulsory: a person must either hold a

recognized trade certificate or be a
registered apprentice in the trade

Optional: an individual is permitted to

work in an optional certification trade if
the employer deems the individual to
have skills and knowledge expected of a
certified journeyperson in the trade

Example of an Electrician
Apprenticeship Pathway
The term of apprenticeship for an electrician is 4 years (four 12month periods) including a minimum of 1500 hours of on-the-job
training and 8 weeks of technical training in each of the first three
years, and a minimum of 1350 hours of on-the-job training and 12
weeks of technical training in the fourth year.
