Only the most profound tragedies, in accordance with Senecan models, occasionally
eschewed all music except for the sounds of trumpets and drums. In his later tragedies,
William Shakespeare defied this orthodoxy and used songs startlingly and movingly,
particularly in Othello, King Lear, and Hamlet.

Shakespeare has more books written about him than any other writer, hes the most
produced playwright and there are more films based on Shakespeare's works than on
any other writer, including ones you might not immediately recognize, like 10 Things I
Hate About You and The Lion King. Its safe to say that Shakespeare is one of the

The Sanders Portrait of William Shakespeare. 1603. Ottowa. By John Sanders.

The Sanders Portrait is one of, if not the, most empirically researched portraits that
depicts William Shakespeare (15641616). The portraits authenticity as a true likeness of
Shakespeare continues to be questioned by critics though supporters point to scientific
tests, genealogical research, and historical contexts which date this portrait not only to
Shakespeares lifetime, but place it as originally painted and owned by a family who
lived in the same neighbourhood as William Shakespeare and would have had
connections through guild membership with the playwright.

throughout time as it becomes an iconic story line with many twist and turns that lead the
watchers to experience dramatic characters and they tragedy that unfolds on stage.
Shakespeare, William. The Tragedy of Macbeth. Champaign, Ill.: Project Gutenberg, 199. Print.
The play is believed to have been written between 1599 and 1606, and is most commonly
dated 1606. The earliest account of a performance of what was probably Shakespeare's
play is the Summer of 1606, when Simon Forman recorded seeing such a play at the
Globe Theatre. It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book.
James was a patron of Shakespeare's acting company, and of all the plays Shakespeare
wrote during James's reign, Macbeth most clearly reflects the playwright's relationship
with the sovereign.

These enduring works feature many famous and well loved characters. The text and
scripts convey vivid impressions. The language used today is, in many ways, different to
that used in the 16th century Elizabethan era and this is often reflected in the script and
text used in the plays. It is therefore not surprising that we have no experience or
understanding of some of the words contained in the text / script of the various works. We
have therefore included a Shakespearean Dictionary for most of the more obscure words
used in the script of his plays, some of which are obsolete in modern language or
Dictionaries.

Although Shakespeare is one of the world's most widely taught authors, he is also one of

numerous film and television adaptations of his plays have been made--some decades ago

audiences continue to respond to the richness of his works. These productions are a
valuable means of introducing students to Shakespeare's plays, for the film and television
versions reflect different interpretations of his works.

More than 4 centuries ago, in 1572, an 8-year-old English lad named William
Shakespeare probably saw something peculiar in the sky. Far away from Stratford,
England, in Denmark, Tycho Brahe saw the new star and was so impressed that he
allegedly asked a neighbor if he was dreaming. We have no way of knowing if our
language's greatest writer ever saw the 1572 supernova or the one that followed in 1604,
but we do know that the night sky played a big role in his later writing. If astronomical
historian Peter Usher is right, Shakespeare might have written about the supernova in the
earliest lines of Hamlet.

man that left school by the age of 16 be capable of writing such works? The apparent
discrepancy between Shakespeares life and his work has resulted in an authorship
debate. Were the plays and poetry attributed to William Shakespeare really written by an
actor named William Shakespeare from Stratford-upon-Avon? Throughout history, there
have been plenty of scholars convinced that someone else was the true author.
