ELECTRICAL MEASUREMENTS II (

E5-B)

Max Marks=50

Second Series Test, Sept/Oct 2014

PART-A
(5*4 =20 Marks)
Highlight the advantages and disadvantages of instrument transformer in power
measurement.
Define the following terms with reference to instrument transformers
(i) Nominal ratio (ii) transformation ratio (iii) turns ratio (iv) burden
The secondary of a CT should never be opened while it is in operation. Explain.
Explain the effect of power factor of secondary winding burden on the errors of a CT
Discuss the effect of change in secondary burden on the performance of a CT.
PART-B
(10*3=30 Marks)
(a) Describe the principle of operation of a current transformer. Draw the vector diagram
of a CT. Derive the expression for transformation ratio and phase angle error in a current
transformer.
(6)
(b) A Current Transformer rated as 1000/5 A, 25 VA has a turns ratio of 1:199. The core
loss and magnetizing component of primary current are 4 A and 7A under rated
conditions. Find the ratio error and phase angle error for rated burden and rated
secondary current at 0.8 pf lag and 0.8 pf lead. Neglect the resistance and leakage
reactance of the secondary winding.
(4)
(a) Describe the principle of operation of a potential transformer. With necessary phasor
diagram, derive expressions for transformation ratio and phase angle error of a potential
transformer.
(6)
(b) A potential transformer of ratio 1000/100 Volt, has the following constants:
Primary resistance=94.5 ohm, Secondary resistance =0.86 ohm, Primary reactance=66.2
ohm, Total equivalent reactance=110 ohm. No load current=0.02A at 0.4 power factor.
Calculate (i) phase angle error at no load
(iii) phase angle error at unity power factor
(4)
.
(a) Explain in detail with relevant circuit schematic and phasor diagram
(i) any one method of testing a potential transformer
(ii) any one method of testing a current transformer
(5+5)
(a) State and explain design features for minimizing errors in a Current Transformer.(any
three)
(5)
(b) Explain how the following are measured using a CRO (i) amplitude (ii) frequency
(iii) phase angle
