Ltd.
Procedures

Review Date:

April 30, 2004

Reviewed By:

Glenn Berry

Section:
Subject: Start up Procedure

Purpose:
On every location there will come a time the well will have to be started up. Start up includes pressure
testing and initiating flow through the vessel.
Potential Hazards:

Terrain
Weather
Pressures
Hydrates
Abrasives
Unknown flow rates( gas and liquid)
Combustible or sour gas/fluids on location

Action:

Information:

1. Prior to start up(opening of well) a

Safety Meeting will be held.

1. To ensure the right people and

equipment are in place. Review
job program.

2. Record Tubing and Casing Pressures.

2. If using well gas for purge.

3. Purge entire system of all air with sweet well

gas or other suitable gases(nitrogen, propane).

3. Refer to Purging procedure in Lonkar

Safety Manual section 9.04.

4. Ensure the pilot at the flare stack is not lit

while purging.

4. To eliminate flashback. Refer to

Lonkar Safety Manual section 9.04.

5. Open master valve to wing valve.

5. To obtain shut in tubing pressure.

6. Record shut in tubing pressure in field notes.

6. Proper recording procedures.

7. Open casing valve to gauge point.

7. To obtain shut in casing pressure.

8. Record shut in casing pressure in field notes.

8. Proper recording procedures.

9. Slowly open wing valve to shut in Chokes on

Choke manifold.

9. Pressure tests flow line to shut in

wellhead pressures.

START UP PROCEDURES

Action:

Information:

10.

Do a visual check of flow line.

10. To ensure your flow line is clear of

leaks.

11.

Ensure a clear methanol injection line to

wellhead.

11. Methanol injection assists hydrate

prevention.

12.

Light pilot on flare stack with an igniter

system. Note; a pen flare shell should
only be used in an emergency situation.

12. This will ignite burnable gas at flare

stack.

13.

Open the choke on choke manifold slowly

to the pressure vessel. Note: always try to
open well on the half hour or on the hour.

13. Well is now open to the vessel.

Proper recording procedure.

14.

Set your desired choke size and flowing

wellhead pressure as soon as possible.

14. This will quickly stabilize well

rate.
.

15.

Monitor wellhead pressures and temperatures

every five minutes after initial well start up.
Record readings in field notes.

15. Very important to know how well is

reacting during initial start up.

16. Once well has stabilized, begin recording all

wellhead readings, pressure tank readings
every half hour.

16. Proper recording procedures.
