The use of Technology in

Teaching
(Grade 2/3)
By: Danielle Driver

School: Fairview Elementary Nanaimo BC

The class is a grade 2/3 split. The students range
very dynamic from a really low grade 2 to a high
grade 3.

The teacher has access to a SMART Board.

The class size is approximately 20 students. ( about
an even number of boys and girls).

Our group used two videos during our day at Fairview. The first video on the left was
used as an introductory video to animals in BC. The video displayed some basic animals
that are native to BC and their habitats surrounding them. This is how we started our
BC animal themed day.
The second video on the right was a fun and silly video that we presented during snack
time. This video captures what animals do when nobody is watching them. A hidden
camera videotapes animals during the day and night of an active spot in the woods.

Tagxedos
For our main activity of the day we used a website/app called Tagxedos. Students in groups compiled a
group of words pertaining to the animal assigned to their group (such as: bear, wolf, whale, otter etc.).
Students got these words from books that they had to scan through about the animal. Once students had
enough words to describe what the animal was, what it ate and its habitat we came around with a laptop
and applied their words in tagxedo which made a picture of words inside the animal it was about. We
wanted to bring in IPad for each group to program their own words in, but the application wouldnt work
the day before. So we just used one laptop.
Then while the students were still working, we compiled the tagxedo pictures into a PowerPoint to
display them on the overhead projector. Once it was displayed we went over each animal and its habitat
using the words given.

For our last activity we did a introduction of Aboriginal understanding and relations to animals. We showed some
animal art and went over what animals mean to the aboriginal peoples. (Such as: Eagle symbolizes grace and
power.) As we discussed each one, we had pictures of the aboriginal art drawings of the animals. We also explained
the symbolism of the animals (http://shop.slcc.ca/legends-symbology ) Such as the ones below:
