FOURTH GRADING PERIOD

LESSON 11: INTRO TO SAFETY EDUCATION


What is safety education?
--refers to the minimization of risk while
maximizing quality of life
--refers to the kind of choices we make as
individuals that can be affected by knowledge,
attitudes and skills

UNINTENTIONAL AND INTENTIONAL


INJURIES
Unintentional or accident injuries
--are injuries caused by accidents. Examples are
household fires, drowning, vehicular accidents and
poisoning.
Intentional injuries
--are injuries resulted from purposeful human action.
Includes self-inflicted harm, bullying, sexual harassment,
fighting, rape and domestic violence

Street dwellers- physical abuse, sexual

exploitation, drug use, road accidents
Out of School youth- smoking, alcohol use,
drug abuse, high risk behavior, risky work
conditions
Urban-based male youth- high risk behavior,
transport accidents, other inflicted injuries
Female adolescent- Sexual abuse, sexual
exploitation, unwanted pregnancies, abortion,
unsafe pregnancy, and insecure motherhood.
Not living with family members- nutritional

INTENTIONAL INJURIES

Why do people harm themselves and others?


--people who harm themselves and others may have
negative self esteem, does not know how to handle
anger, or not exposed to violent behaviors.

BULLYING
Why is bullying harmful?
Victims can receive physical injury from their abuse
Young people who bully are at risk of criminal
behavior
Peers of victims who are bullied are also affected by
bullying

VIOLENCE
VIOLENCE is the intentional use of force that results to
harming someone or destroying property.
OTHER forms of violence includes fighting-taking part in a
physical struggle, assault and homicide.
DOMESTIC violence happens within the family or within other
relationships where people live together like spouse abuse,
siblings hurting each other childe abuse and the likes.

INTENTIONAL INJURIES
How can I reduce the risk of violence?
-- being a street smart helps you reduce the risk of
violence. A street smart has a good common sense,
can handle bad situations and has skills necessary to
function where they live.
