Let consider the superhet RR having the block diagram

given on this slide. The RR is designed for Short Wave
range (2,326,1 MHz). The intermediate frequency is
455kHz and the RFTC quality factor is Q=15.

Superhet RR: application

An user wants to listen to a broadcast in the 49 m band

(5900..6200 kHz). He remarks that the desired
transmission can be found both in the mentioned band
(approximately 6MHz) and outside it but with different
signal levels. The receiver does not include an AGC
system. You are required to:
1. Explain this phenomenon and specify an
approximate value for the frequency indicated on
the radio scale in the case of the signal received
outside the band.
2. Evaluate the value of the ratio of the two signals
levels.

Superhet RR: application

1.Considering the low image selectivity (image rejection

ratio) in the SW range, the same signal is processed
both as normal signal (superheterodyne procedure) and
as image channel (infraheterodyne procedure).

fs2=6M

So the value observed on the scale for the second

signal is: 6-2x0.455=5,09MHz.
In order to evaluate the required ratio we have to
calculate the image frequency rejection ratio.
As we see in the Block Diagram there is a tuned circuit
only: the RFTC.
So that the image rejection ratio and the ratio of the
two output signals is:
a=10log(1+x2) where x=Q(fimag/fs-fs/fimag)
a=10log(25.4)=14.04 dB
