down and placed the cardboard box on the desk
in front of him and began to speak, everyone
attentive.

Virginia candidate for governor Mr.
Robert Sarvis of the Libertarian party came
to Langley to speak with students about his
personal views and what they can do to further
his campaign.

At the meeting in Ms. Allison Cohens
room, Sarvis began by introducing crucial aspects
of his campaign. I want to get cronyism out of
government and return to the rule of law which
will help us get the economy going.

Candidate Sarvis grew up in Virginia
and is an alumnus of Thomas Jefferson High
School. He pursued degrees in mathematics at
Harvard and the University of Cambridge.

During high school, Sarvis was aware
of a potential career as a governor but never took
it into consideration until recent years. I was
never going to pursue politics until 2011, he
said.

Before his interest in politics, Sarvis
was a software and mobile-app developer. Early
on in 2000, I was working in San Francisco for
software development and I got back into it in
2008 and did that for a few years.

President of Libertarian Club,
senior Jack Baird, was elated about the unique
opportunity of an individual already in the field
coming to speak to students at Langley. It
got spearheaded through some of our members
also working in adjunct with the GSA and then
members picked it up.

A member of the GSA, junior Connor
Kianpour, said, Ivy Kenton and I managed
to get him to come by calling, emailing and

eventually, tweeting Mr. Sarvis. He responded in

the past week showing great interest, so Ivy and I
put everything together to make it work.

Sarvis has two running opponents, one
of which is Terry McAuliffe of the Democratic
Party. McAuliffe is a strong advocate of
expanding Medicaid, increasing teachers salaries
and expanding gay rights.

President of the Young Democrats
Club Jiho Kim is impressed by Sarvis
explanations; however, he is skeptical of some of
his arguments. I question his opposition to the
bipartisan initiative to improve transportation
and his conservative stance on abortion. I think
both Cuccinelli and McAuliffe are a bit more
partisan than the average voter would like, he
said.

Sarvis other opponent, Republican
Ken Cuccinelli, stresses cutting taxes, creating
more charter schools and blocking Medicaid
expansion among other goals. "I've noticed that
Cuccinelli's support is strong across rural regions
of Virginia, but McAullife has gained significant
support from Northern Virginia where there are
more minority voters. This could be one of the
closest elections in Virginia's history," said Justin
Yi, member of Young Republicans club.

The winning candidate for governor of
Virginia will be determined in the gubernatorial
election on November 5.
