Portable Flare Ignition Procedures

Purpose:
To safely ignite pilot at top of flare stack.
Potential Hazards:

Fire
Flashback
Wind
Rain

Action:

Information:

1. Check that all valves are closed.

1. Valves located at pilot and propane


bottle.

2. Turn valve on at propane bottle.


Turn ball valve on to pilot line.

2. Supplies propane to igniter and pilot


line.

3. Open needle valve at igniter and


allow propane to go up igniter tube
for at least one minute to a maximum
of two minutes.

3. Ensures adequate fuel supply to top


of flare stack.

4. Press igniter switch to an audible


bang is heard.

4. The audible bang is the igniter tube


being ignited and the fireball is
proceeding upward.

5. Watch top of stack for flame.

5. Indication that the pilot has lit.

6. Repeat procedure until flame is


visible at top of stack.
7. Slowly turn off needle valve on igniter.

7. It is probably a good idea to keep on


if Nitrogen expected.
