UCN Closure Optical Fiber Cable Applications

1.

Introduction

1.1.

This Training note describes the closure components, installation tools, set up
procedures, installation and re-entry of UCN closures and methods of housing optical
fiber splice organizer trays in UCN 7-20 closures.

1.2.

This Student learning guide should be read in conjunction with the instructions
supplied with the closure kits.

2.

Application

2.1

The UCN 7-20 Closures are used as large size optical fiber closures in the Optical
Fiber Transmission Network.

3.

Description

3.1

The UCN closure is a sealed, re-enterable closure which can accept either single or
multiple cables in either of its two ends.

3.2

The size of the closure is indicated by the numbers in the closure title. The UCN 720 closure diameter is 7 inches (175mm) and the maximum cable sheath opening
required for the closure is 20 inches (500mm). Note that the number 20 is not the
overall length of the closure but the maximum cable sheath opening required within the
closure.

3.3.

To house optical fibers the closure shall be fitted with mounting brackets and optical
fiber splice organizer trays.
