FREQUENCY REUSE

Introduction

The key characteristic of a cellular network is

the ability to reuse frequencies to increase

both coverage ad capacity.
Adjacent cells must use different frequencies,
however there is no problem with two cells
sufficiently far apart operating on the same
frequency.
The elements that determine frequency reuse
are the reuse distance and reuse factor.

FREQUENCY REUSE

Cellular Concept
o The limited capacity of the first mobile radio-telephone

services was related to the spectrum usednot much

sharing and a lot of band width dedicated to a single call.
Good coverage
Interference: impossible to reuse the same frequency
o The cellular concept addressed many of the short coming of
the first mobile telephones
Frequency reuse
Wasted spectrum allocated to a single user
o In 1968, Bell labs proposed the cellular telephony concept to
the FCC.
o It was approved and then the work began

FCC allocated spectrum (took away TV UHF channels 70-83) in the 825 845 Mhz and 870-890 Mhz bands.
FREQUENCY REUSE

Principles
Frequencies allocated to the service are re-used in

regular pattern of areas, called cells, each covered

by on base station.
In mobile-telephone nets these cells are usually
hexagonal.
To ensure that the mutual interference between users
remains below harmful level, adjacent cells use
different frequencies.
A set of C different frequencies {f1,.fc} are used for
each cluster of C adjacent cell. Cluster patterns and
the corresponding frequencies are re-used in a regular
pattern over the entire service area.
FREQUENCY REUSE

For C=3,

FREQUENCY REUSE

For C=7,

FREQUENCY REUSE

Frequency reuse
Adjacent cells are assigned to different frequencies to avoid

interference and cross talk.

Objective is to use frequency in near by cells.
10-50 frequencies assigned to each cell
Transmission power controlled to limit power at that
frequency escaping to adjacent cells.
The issue is to determine how many cells must
intervene between two cells using the same frequency.

FREQUENCY REUSE

Cont

Frequency reuse is the practice of splitting an area into

smaller regions that do not overlap so that each utilizes the

full range of frequencies without interference.

FREQUENCY REUSE

Advantages

o Effective usage of frequency spectrum

o Coverage problems are reduced
o Subscribers demand is satisfied
