Effort is the work you are putting in.

Reward is what you receive for your work.
You want your presentation to have low
effort and high reward.

Effort is high, reward is low

There is too much text to read!
The yellow is difficult to see on
the lighter blue background

Effort is high, reward

is low
Using all capital
letters makes it hard to
read!
Little space between
lines of text

Graphic is high quality
The white text is easy to

Information is broken
down into numbered
sections
Body text is kept short

Theme is when a specific subject or setting

is used throughout your presentation.

Theme is one of several elements in a design that helps bring all of your information together.
When you look at the two sets of slides on this page, can you tell that each pair were from
the same presentation? What kind of theme would you describe each set as having?

e
m
The

Different kinds of presentations have different themes. The top slides have a black and white
theme of increasing and amplifying personal productivity. The bottom slides have a colorful
theme of futuristic possibilities. Each pair of slides have a clear theme that ties them together.

Picture verbs are verbs that put pictures in

our minds.
Concrete nouns are objects, people, or
animals that exist.
When we combine these words with images
we get a solid visual and message.

This slide uses the verb

shapes
Is the image explaining
what the word shapes
means?
Does the image put a
solid idea in your mind
of what the message is?

This slide uses the noun project,

specifically one to do with
mapping
Is the image explaining what this
project looks like?
Does the image put a solid idea in
your mind of what a mapping
project is?

This slide is using the verb

amplify
The image helps give the
reader the picture in their
mind of how a microphone
amplifies a voice

This slide is using the verb

reach
The image helps gives the
reader the visual of a young
child reaching to grasp the
world

Audience is the person seeing or hearing

your information.
We need to make our presentations useful
to our audience!

Who is the audience for each of the slides shown? What is Always Relevant and to
whom? Who is trying to Decide upon doing and not doing?

Who is the audience?

Elementary school
students
How can you tell?
Young graphics
Use of educational
words (classification
and criteria)

Who is the audience?

Adults in the business
world
How can you tell?
Context clues: buyers,
marketing, sellers
Professional words:

Embellishment is when graphics dont

strengthen the message in any way.
Enhancement is when graphics dont tell
us everything, but strengthen the message.
Embodiment is when graphics give us the
entire message.
(Bucy, 2014)

The no sign in the left column

is an embellishment - it is
distracting and makes the text
hard to read
The man being squished by a
hand is either an embellishment
or enhancement (for those
unfamiliar with the word
smothered)

The image of the brain is an

embellishment
Embellishments can make you
have more questions
(Ex: Is the research medical?
Will technology be put in our
brains? Are humans
researching technology?)

The images (or infographics) in

this slide are enhancing the
message
Text is still needed to give us the
context of the given statistical
information

The graphic behind the text is

embodiment - it is telling the
audience what the message is
(media relations today are
creating a connected world)
Context clues: like, tweet

Proximity is a nearness in space, time, or

relationship between elements.

Proximity tells us that

items close together
should have a
relationship
Is there a relationship
between this image
and the text? Who is
researching what?

The background image

is a flower, while the text
is about needed skills
Is there a relationship
between this image and
the text? What does the
flower have to do with
modern skills?

y

The images are

centered directly
above the body text
Each image matches
the text below it
Ex: Customer (person),
Relationships (heart)

The background image is

clear and the focus
The text below discusses
NASA prototypes vs.
astronauts
Both the prototype and
astronaut are shown

Alignment is where the text and graphics

are positioned on the slide.

All of the text should be

aligned in the same way
(either right, left, or centered)
Each section of text on this
slide is aligned differently
Different alignments in one
slide makes it look messy and
disorganized

Again, this slide has the

text aligned in multiple
ways
The title of the slide is
center aligned
The contact information is
right aligned

Only one alignment

is used
This slide is left
aligned
When text is all
aligned in one way, it
looks clean and
professional

Only one alignment is

used
This slide is right aligned
Having all of the text on
one side draws the
readers eye to that
section

Repetition is when a graphic, color, font, or

other element is repeated.
It is what keeps the presentation consistent.

What elements are being repeated? The top slide is too simple - there is nothing to repeat!
The bottom slide is very busy but has no repetition (Ex: the books are even different sizes)

Re

n

The white font color is

repeated
All of the photographs are
the same exact shape and
size, which makes it clean
and easy for the reader
Each photograph has the
named centered below it

Repetition = Unity
The larger white beginning
letter is repeated
The same body font is
used
The arrow graphics are
aligned with each other

Contrast is when there are striking

differences between elements.

What elements are contrasting? Both of these slides used light fonts, which blend into the
background graphics. Without contrast, there is no visual interest for your audience!

The contrasting red color

helps to emphasize the
word Organize

There is contrast between

text colors and sizes,
grabbing your attention

There is contrast with the

headings being bolded, all
capitalized, and in a
different color
The contrast helps organize
and guide the reader
through the information

Color includes everything in the color wheel

and how you combine them.

The font color and

background colors are too
similar - it is difficult to read
what it says!
Part of the title text is lost
behind the graphic

Both slides below use a font color that is extremely difficult to read on the background. How
can our audience benefit if they cant read or access any of the information given to them?

r
o
l
Co

This slide uses a darker font

that is easy to read against the
lighter background
The text and background by
themselves are examples of a
monochromatic color scheme
(each are different versions of
the same original color)

There is a clear contrast of

colors between the yellow
and dark blue
This is an example of using
primary colors - they
complement each other
well

Style is when your end result has a distinct

or particular appearance.

Do either of these slides have a style that jumps out at you? Can you think of any adjectives
that describe them? Without style, there is no balance or unity within your presentation.

Style can tell you about

the creator and get you
excited to learn more
This slide has a very clear
style
Adjectives to describe it:
Artistic
Creative
Fun

All of the elements in this slide

are working together to tell you
about its story
Adjectives to describe it:
Futuristic
Business
Modern

Type is what kinds of fonts (and how many)

you use in your presentation.

This slide shows two very

different fonts, but you can only
read one
The bulleted information is nearly
impossible, even when up close,
to read this type!

This type is too light in

color and decorative - it is
difficult to read

There are four very different

fonts used here - too many
fonts look sloppy

This slide shows two very

different fonts, but both
are easy to read
The decorative, curly
type is only used for a
few words
These types complement
each other through
contrast

This slide is fun and

captures the readers
attention with simplicity
Only one type is used,
which makes it look neat
and professional
