What is a social structure?

In sociology, is the organized pattern of social relationships and social institutions that together
compose society. They arent immediately visible to the inexpert observer; however theyre
presented and affected by all human dimensions of experiences in society.
One example is social class.
What is a social class?
Are the social structure hierarchical positions groups hold relative with the economic, social,
political, and cultural resources of society. Consists of two or more people who interact and
recognize themselves as a different social unit.
Types of social groups

Primary: Close-knit. They have a small scale, intimate relationships, usually long lasting.
Members have a strong identity. An example: a nuclear family.
Secondary: Pretty informal. They have tasks instead of relationships, usually short term.
Members meet infrequently. An example: a committee organized to plan a party at work.
Reference: Important. They influence how consumers interpret information and make
purchasing decisions, serve as models or inspiration. Members determine what types of
products youll purchase and which brand of product you choose. An example: celebrities.

What is stratification?
Is the system by which social ranks categories of people in hierarchy. In the United States, for
example, is perfectly clear that some groups have greater power, status, and wealth than other
groups. Is based on four major factors:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Is a trait of society, not simply a reflection of individual differences.

Persists over generations.
Is universal (happens everywhere) but also variable (takes different forms in society)
Involves not just inequality but also beliefs as well (in a societys philosophy)
