February 2015 Monthly Overview For Parents

Teacher: Mr. Jones

Grade: 6

Dear Parents,
For the month of February, 2015 our grade 6 class will be studying
the following things in English Language Arts, English Social Studies,
English Science and English Math.
English
Language Arts

-Novel Study: We will continue to read, study


and discuss the novel The Westing Game. We
will be doing a Lit Circle each Tuesday
throughout February. The students will be
expected to prepare their part of the Lit Circle
each week and participate actively during the
circle discussions. (See Lit Circle Handout)
-Writing: As February is Kindness Month at
CBIS, the students will be doing a variety of
different writing about kindness. Journal entries
throughout the month will also have a kindness
theme.
-Spelling: We will continue with our weekly
spelling and sentence quiz each Friday. Words
will be distributed every Monday.
Resources: Nelson spelling 6, The Westing
Game, Short Stories.

English Social
Studies

Planning for the Future: Students will explore


the issue of sustainable resource management
through the topic of fresh water. We will learn how
resources are made , used, and kept in good
condition. Looking at not only Canada, but places all
over the world, we will assess how countries of the
North can contribute to sustainable resource
management in the South.
Projects: Making maps, class surveys, analysis of
certain
features,
rating

management, debating, and self-assessing problem

solving strategies.
Vocabulary: Sustainable, management, water
cycle, precipitation, aquifer, groundwater, estuary,

English Science

Electricity: The students will learn more about


the two types of electricity this month (static
and current). We will be conducting
experiments in class and in the science lab
using circuits, balloons, batteries and lights as a
way to show the students how electricity works.
We will also be making electric circuits.
Important Vocabulary: atom, electron,
proton, neutron, nucleus, current, circuit, static,
voltage, conductor, generator, insulator, energy

English
Mathematics

-Comparing improper fractions to mixed


numbers.
-Finding equivalent fractions.
-Equivalent Ratios
*Students will need a protractor for math
throughout February.
