SCOPE AND NATURE OF LITERATURE

Philippine literature was primarily oral in nature as most written literature was destroyed. After
the destruction of the Philippine written literature by the Spanish during their conquest of the
region, Spanish became the predominant language. The promotion of the Spanish language
throughout the more accessible parts of the Philippines led to the development of the devotional
poetry of the ladinos in the 1700s.
Other languages used in Philippine literature include English to a slight degree, the native
Tagalog and other languages native to the Philippines.

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY OF LITERATURE

As in the study of algebra and calculus, the study of literature builds thinking skills that are
native to the subject but applicable outside the subject as well.
Skills of argumentation (logical thinking, citing evidence, etc.), intepretation, critical thinking,
and writing are all a part of the study of literature.
Literature - seen as a body of works - offers a unique education in itself, representing a wealth of
ideas, perpectives, world views, emotional insights and more, all of which enrich the reader's
"ideational vocabulary", expanding the range of thoughts and ideas available to the reader.
5 COMMON LITERARY FORMS

Essay - In its broadest sense, "essay" may refer to just about any short piece of
nonfiction: an editorial, a feature story, a critical study, even an excerpt from a book.

Poetry - form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of languagesuch
asphonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metreto evoke meanings in addition to, or in
place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning.

Short Story - an invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few
characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the creation of mood
rather than plot.

Novel - A novel is a long narrative, normally in prose, which

describes fictional characters and events, usually in the form of a sequential story.

Drama - a literary composition involving conflict, action crisis and atmosphere designed
to be acted by players on a stage before an audience. This definition may be applied to
motion picture drama as well as to the traditional stage.
