This project has generated various undergraduate and graduate theses focusing on water quality assessments of the 7 Lakes of San Pablo City through analyses of physico-chemical properties, biological indicators, sediments, phytoplankton, and coliform contamination. Additional research has looked at nutrient availability, bathymetry, soil analyses, and the impacts of aquaculture, domestic, and agricultural activities on lake sustainability. The Environmental Science Department has adopted the lakes for research as well as community development work through information dissemination. Recent collaboration set up early warning sensors to identify water quality changes and warn fishermen of potential fish kills.

This project has generated various researches and thesis for
both undergraduate and graduate students work. The studies focused on water quality assessments which considered the physico-chemical analyses of the water, the identification of biological indicators to pollution, sediment analyses, phytoplankton inventory and colliform contamination. Other than water quality assessments, are researches on nutrient availability and dispersion, bathymetry and soil analyses. The impacts of aquaculture being a major livelihood program of the lake shore communities, domestic and agricultural activities are studied and correlated with the sustainability of the lakes. The ES Department has actively adopted the lakes not only as research areas by also for social service and extension work with emphasis on community development through information dissemination. Recent collaborative work with the Ateneo Innovation Center looked into the use of solar-powered temperature and dissolved oxygen sensors to immediately identify changes in water quality. The set up provided an early warning system for the fisherfolks on the occurrence of a fish kill in the lake. http://www.ateneo.edu/ls/sose/environmental-science/7-lakes-san-pablo-city-research-project
