<Abstract>

The Absolute Consciousness in Husserls Early Writings on

Time-Consciousness : In relation to The Primal Consciousness
Tae-Hee Kim
The absolute consciousness introduced in Husserls early analyses
into time-consciousness is the consciousness which constitutes the
time of intentional consciousness. After Husserls first analyses
reached the inner time constituting the objective time, they searched
for the absolute consciousness constituting this inner time. In order
to explain both the constitution of the inner time by the absolute
consciousness and the self-constitution of the absolute consciousness,
Husserl introduced the double intentionality of retention. For all
that, the essence of the absolute consciousness must be explicated
with respect to the primal consciousness, i. e. the self-consciousness
of intentional consciousness. In this discussion, Zahavi rejects the
absolute consciousness as an unnecessary multiplication. Yet, in
this article we identify difficulties of Zahavis arguments and lay
stress that the absolute consciousness cannot be reduced to the
primal

consciousness

as

the

self-consciousness

of

intentional

consciousness. Although the absolute consciousness includes the

primal consciousness as its moment, it is the time-constituting
consciousness which surpasses the primal consciousness.
