ChapterI:TheOldSeaDogatthe"AdmiralBenbow"
TreasureIslandisnarratedbyJimHawkins.TheeventstakeplaceinsouthwestEnglandandthe
Caribbeanatsomeunspecifiedtimeintheeighteenthcentury.Jimisaboywholiveswithhisparentsat
theAdmiralBenbowinn,insouthwestEngland,neartheportcityofBristol.Anoldseamantakesup
lodgingattheinn.Nooneknowsmuchabouthim.Hedrinksalotofrumbutdoesnotspeakmuch,and
heseemswary.HetellsJimtolookoutfor"theseafaringmanwithoneleg,"andlethimknowwhenthe
manappears.Somepeopleareafraidofthemantheyknowonlyasthecaptain,largelybecauseofthe
seafaringstorieshetellsabouthangingsandwalkingtheplankandotherhorrors.WhenDr.Livesey,
thefamilyphysician,comestoattendtoJim'sdyingfather,heencountersthecaptain.Theyquarrel,and
thecaptaindrawsaknifeonthedoctor.Thedoctorcalmlyfaceshimdown.
ChapterII:BlackDogAppearsandDisappears
OneJanuary,amanarrivesattheinn,askingabouthisfriendnamedBilly.Hemeanstheoldseaman,
whomJimstillknowsonlyasthecaptain.Thecaptainisoutforawalk,andwhenhereturns,the
strangerappearsfrightened.Thecaptainidentifiesthestranger,whoismissingtwofingersfromhis
hand,asBlackDog.Theyareoldshipmates.Theysitandtalk,butsoonquarrel,andBlackDogruns
away.Thecaptaincallsforsomerum.Heappearstobewounded,andatthatmomentDr.Livesey
arrives.Hesaysthecaptainhashadastroke,andtreatshim,tellinghimtostayoffrum.
ChapterIII:TheBlackSpot
Atnoon,thecaptaininsiststhatJimbringhimsomerum.Hesaysthatanumberofmen,including
Black
Dog
,areafterhisoldseachest,buthedoesnotsaywhy.Allthemenareformercrewmembersof
CaptainFlint
,anotoriouspirate.Thisincludesthecaptain,whosenameturnsouttobeBillyBones.
BoneswasFlint'sfirstmate.Hefearstheothermenwillgivehimtheblackspot,andwhenJiminquires
whatthisis,hemerelyrepliesthatitisasummons.Hemeansitisanoticeofdeath.
Jim'sfatherdiesthatevening.Thedayafterthefuneral,a
blindman
arrivesattheinnwearinganold
tatteredseacloak.Jimthinksheisadreadfullookingman.HeasksJimtotakehimtothecaptain.His
voiceiscruel.Whenthetwomenmeet,theblindmanplacessomethinginthepalmofthecaptain's
hand.Thenheleavesimmediately.Thecaptainisstruckbyafitanddies.
ChapterIV:TheSeaChest
Jimandhismothergotothenearesthamletforhelp.Butwhenthepeopletherehearthestory,theyare
toofrightenedtogivethemmuchassistance.Jimandhismotherreturntotheinnanddecidetoopen
thecaptain'sseachest.TheyalsofindthepieceofpaperthatBlackDoggavetothecaptain.Itis
blackenedononeside.Ontheotheriswritten,"Youhavetilltentonight."Itisstillsixo'clockasthey
openthechest,afterfindingthekeyonthecaptain'scorpse.Mrs.Hawkinstakesoutsomecoins,which
shekeepsinpaymentofthecaptain'sdebttoherforhislodgings.Thereisascarewhentheblindman
comestothedoor,butthedoorislockedandheleaveswithoutentering.Expectingmorementocome
atanyminute,motherandsonfleethehouse.TheydonotgetfarbeforeJim'smotherfaints.Jim
managestohaulherunderabridge,wheretheywait.
ChapterV:TheLastoftheBlindMan
Jimseessevenoreightmenrushby,includingtheblindbeggar,headingfortheAdmiralBenbowinn.
Severalmenentertheinnandfindthatthecaptainisdeadandthechestalreadyopened.Theyare
lookingforsomethingspecific,otherthanmoney,buttheydonotfindit.Theblindman,whosenameis
Pew,ordersthementosearchforJimandhismother.Themensearchfruitlessly,andthenquarrel
amongstthemselves.Thesoundofgallopinghorsesisheard,andthemenscatter.Fivemenarriveon
horseback.Pewinadvertentlyrunsunderthehorse'shoovesandistrampledtodeath.Theridersturn
outtobefourrevenueofficers(probablymenresponsiblefortrackingdownsmugglers)thatDr.Livesey
summonedtohelp.Theothermenescapebyboat.Backattheinn,Jimbelieveshepossesseswhatthe
menwerelookingfor.ItisagreedthatDr.Liveseyshouldtakepossessionofit.Jimaccompaniesthe

supervisor,Mr.Dance,backtoDr.Livesey'shouse.
ChapterVI:TheCaptain'sPapers
AtDr.Livesey'shouse,JimmeetsSquireTrelawney.ThesquireexplainsthatFlintwasabloodthirsty
buccaneerwhooperatedintheCaribbean.Jimhandsoverthepackethesavedfromthechest.It
containsabookandasealedpaper.ThebookcontainsBillyBones'srecordsoftheactsofpiracy
committedunderFlint'scommand,andhowmuchhisshareofthetreasurewas.Thesealedpaper
containsamapofanisland.Threeredcrossesshowwheretreasureisburied,andtherearealsosome
writtendirectionsontheothersideofthemap.Thesquireannouncesthathewillgototheportcityof
Bristolandacquireaship.Liveseywillgoastheship'sdoctor,Jimascabinboy.Threeofthesquire's
ownmen,Redruth,HunterandJoyce,willalsogo,andthesquirewillroundupacrew.Liveseyagrees,
withtheprovisionthatstrictsecrecybyobserved.Heisconcernedthatthesquirewilltalktoomuch
aboutthenewenterprise.
Analysis:PartI
PartI,whichconsistsofthefirstsixchapters,carriesthestoryfromthefirsteruptionofdangeratthe
quietcountryinntothemomentthemaincharactersdecidetosailtoTreasureIslandinsearchof
treasure.PartIalsoshowshowJimHawkinsisforcedtogrowuprapidlyandbegintocharthisown
courseinlife.
Thefirstchapterwastesnotimeinintroducingtheelementofsuspenseanddangerthatwill
characterizethenovelasawhole.Jim'slifeattheAdmiralBenbowinnisuneventfuluntilthecaptain
arrives.Butfromthenon,therearehintsthatanother,moredangerousworldisabouttointrudeitself.
Ontheveryfirstpage,forexample,welearnthatthecaptainhasascaronhischeekcausedbyasaber
cut,whichsuggeststheviolentlifehehasled.Theelementofdangerisalsoconveyedbythe
frighteningstoriesthecaptaintells.Interestandsuspensearereinforcedwhenitbecomesclearthatthe
captainwishestoavoidanyseamenthatpassbytheinn.Hisparticularinterestintheseamanwithone
legalsocreatessuspense.ThisisofcourseaforeshadowingoftheappearanceofLongJohnSilver,
andthethoughtofsuchamangivesJimnightmares.MoreinterestiscreatedbyJim'smentionofthe
bigboxthatthecaptainkeepsupstairs,thatnoonehasseenopen.Itmakesthereaderwonderwhatis
init.Stevenson'stechniquehereisamodelofhowtotellagoodstoryandmakethereaderwantto
keepturningthepages.
InchaptersIIandIII,themenacingappearanceofBlackDogandtheblindman,aswellasthedeathof
Jim'sfather,addtothefeelingthatlifeforJimHawkinswillneverbethesameagain.Thisisinfacta
comingofagestory.Jimissoonforcedtomakehisownwayinlife.Thedeathofhisfatherleaveshim
withouttheguidanceofanolderman,andhewillsoonmeetmanyothermen,representingavarietyof
beliefs,professionsandethicalvalues.Whowillhechoosetoemulate?
ButinChapterIII,itisclearthatJimisstillachild.Whenthecaptaindies,thefirstthinghedoesiscall
tohismotherandburstintotears.WhentheygoforhelpinChapterIV,itisJim'smotherwhodoesthe
talking.Butlaterinthatchapter,Jimtakeschargewhenhismotherfaints.
InChapterV,JimshowshissenseofresponsibilitywhenhetellsMr.Dancethathewouldliketo
conveytosafetythepackethesavedfromthecaptain'schest.ItisthisactionthatleadstoJim's
meetingwiththesquire,andhisopportunitytogoonthefirstgreatadventureofhislife.Frombeinga
youngboylivingwithhisparentshehasbecomeapersonwithresponsibilitiesofhisown.
ChapterVII:IGotoBristol
InBristol,TrelawneyacquiresaschoonercalledtheHispaniola.HehiresamannamedLongJohn
Silverastheship'scook.Silverlostaleginanavalbattleservinghiscountry.Trelawneyisimpressed
bySilver,anddescribeshimasamanofsubstance.WithSilver'shelp,thesquirealsoacquiresacrew
forthevessel.Jimtakesleaveofhismother,andtravelswithRedruth,thesquire'sgamekeeper,to
Bristol.Heisexcitedabouthisnewadventure.Trelawneysaystheyaretosailthenextday.
ChapterVIII:AttheSignofthe"Spyglass"

JimmeetsSilveratatavern,whenhedeliversanotetoSilverfromthesquire.Likethesquire,Jim
formsafavorableimpressionofSilver.Heischeerful,pleasantandintelligent,andJimnolongerfears
thathemaybetheoneleggedmanthatBillyBonestoldhimtolookoutforatthe"AdmiralBenbow."As
heandSilverexchangegreetings,JimseesthebuccaneerheremembersasBlackDogfleeingthe
tavern.SilverclaimshedoesnotknowwhoBlackDogis,andJimbelieveshim.Astheytalkmore,
SilvertellsJimheissmart.Theygooutsideandwalkalongthequaystogether.JimfindsSilveran
interestingcompanion.
ChapterIX:PowderandArms
Theygoaboardtheship.JimmeetsArrow,theship'smate,andCaptainSmollett.Smolletttellsthe
squirethathedoesnotlikethecrew,ortheplannedtrip,orArrow.Onbeingaskedtoexplainhimself,
hesayshehasheardthevoyageisfortreasure,andhedoesnotliketreasurevoyages.Stilllessdoes
helikeitwheneveryoneelseseemstoknowmoreaboutthematterthanhedoes.Hehasheardthat
thereisamapwiththelocationofthetreasuremarkedonit,andallthecrewknowsofit.Thecaptain
fearsamutiny.AfterSmollettleaves,thesquirecommentsthathedislikeshim.Butheactsonthe
captain'sprecautionarysuggestions,whichistoplaceallthementheyknowtobeloyalinthesternpart
oftheship,withaccesstoallthegunsandpowder.
ChapterX:TheVoyage
TheHispaniolabeginsitsvoyage.Jimdoesnotrelatethevoyageindetail,buthedoestellofafew
events.Arrowturnsouttohavenocontroloverthemen,andheisalsoadrunkard.Onedaywhenheis
drunkhefallsoverboard.JobAndersonreplaceshimasmate.IncontrasttoArrow,Silverislikedand
respectedbythemen,whoobeyhim.SilverisalwayskindtoJim.HekeepsaparrotcalledCap'nFlint,
andclaimsthattheparrotistwohundredyearsold.
Meanwhile,thesquireandthecaptainarestillonbadterms.Thecaptainspeakslittle.Onthelastdayof
thevoyage,Jimdecidesthathewantsanapple.Heclimbsintotheapplebarrel,andfallsasleepinside
it.Thenheisawakenedbythethudofamanleaningupagainstthebarrel.HehearsthevoiceofLong
JohnSilver,andsoonrealizestohishorrorthatthelivesofallthehonestmenontheshipdependon
himalone.
ChapterXI:WhatIHeardintheAppleBarrel
JimoverhearsSilvertalkingtoDick,ayoungmemberofthecrew.Silverrevealsthatheisapirate.He
wasCaptainFlint'squartermaster,andaccumulatedwealthfromhisshareofthetreasuretheystole.He
usedthemoneywisely,unlikemostpirates,byputtingitinbanks.Hegottolivelikeagentleman
throughhisillgottengains.Ashelistens,JimrealizesthatSilverisenlistingthecrewforaplottogain
thetreasureforthemselves.SilverandDickarethenjoinedbyIsraelHands,thecoxswain,whoisalsoa
memberoftheconspiracy.Hewantstoknowwhentheycanstrike.Silversaysonlywhenhegivesthe
word,andthatwillbeaslateaspossible,whenthetreasurehasbeenfoundandloadedontotheship.
Thenheintendstokilleveryoneotherthanhisbandofpirates.Hewantstostranglethesquire.Jimalso
learnsthattherearestillsomemembersofthecrewwhowillnotjointheconspiracy.
ChapterXII:CouncilofWar
TheHispaniolasailswithinsightofthetreasureisland.JimfindsawayofarrangingameetingwithDr.
Livesey,CaptainSmollettandthesquireinthecabin.HetellsthemeverythingheheardSilversay.The
squireadmitsthatSmollettwasrightaboutthecrew.Smollettsaysthattimeisontheirsideuntilthey
findthetreasure.Thenhesuggeststhattheyattackfirst,takingthepiratesbysurprise.Theyassess
whoarethementheycanstillrelyon.Jimrealizesthattheyareoutnumberedbyseventonineteen.
ChapterXIII:
("HowMyShoreAdventureBegan")

Jimrecallswakinginthemorningtofindtheship

becalmedsoutheastofwhathenowbeginstocallTreasureIsland,aplaceofdismallookingwoodsand
oddlyshapedhills,whoseappearancehefindsunpleasant.Thereisnowind,sothemenmustgetin
boatsandrow,haulingtheshipseveralmilesuptheisland'seasterncoastandintoanarrowstrait
betweenitandasmallerisland(SkeletonIsland)tobeanchoredinthishaven.Jim,intheboat
commandedbytheboatswainAnderson,seesthatthemenareinasurlymood.It'sabreezeless,hot
day,andafterallhavereturnedtotheship,Liveseysaystheairsmellsoffever.Inthecabin,

Trelawney'spartyholdsacouncil,andSmollettsaysthecrewwillmutinyimmediatelyifsomethingisnot
done,butthatSilverwillkeepthemfromitifheisallowedtotakethemenashorefortheafternoon.
TheycallinTrelawney'sservants,Hunter,Joyce,andRedruth,tellthemwhat'sgoingon,andallseven,
includingJim,arearmedwithpistols.Silverarrangesashorepartyofthirteenintwoboats,leavingsix
men(alongwiththesquire'sgroup)onboard,andatthelastminuteJim,onimpulse,getsintooneof
theboats.ThisboatreachesshorebeforeSilver'sboat,andalthoughJimhearsSilvercallingtohim,he
jumpsoutandrunsthroughathicket,awayfromthegrouponshore.

ChapterXIV:
("TheFirstBlow")beginswithJim,onhisown,exploringthepartoftheislandonwhich
hefindshimself.Heencountersvegetation,birds,andsnakesthatareunfamiliartohim.(Theisland
seemstobelocatedsomewhereinorneartheCaribbeanthesnakeJimseesandhearsisa
rattlesnake,anativetoAmericaasStevenson,whohadspentsometimeinCaliforniaandNevada,
wouldhaveknown.Jimalsoidentifiessomeofthetreesheseesasliveoaks,asortofevergreenoak
nativetothesoutheasternU.S.andpresumablytoCaribbeanislandsaswell.)Then,hearingvoices
approach,Jimcroucheshiddenandstill,andthencreepstowherehecanoverheartheconversation.
Therearetwomen,SilverandanothercalledTom.TomisarguingwithSilveragainstthepirates'
enterprise,andSilveristryingtoconvincehimtogoalongwiththem.Butthenallhearaloud,terrible
scream,obviouslyadeathcry,andSilvertellsTomthatitwasAlan,apparentlyanotherwhohastriedto
resistthepirates'business.TomrefusesSilver'sadviceandturnstowalkaway.Silverthrowshis
walkingcrutchandknocksTomdown,thenfallsonhimandstabshimtodeath.Jim,horrified,backs
awayandrunsfromthesoundoftheotherapproachingmen,whomSilverhassummonedwitha
whistle.

ChapterXV:"TheManoftheIsland"

Jimencountersawild,raggedEnglishman,halfcrazy,whosays
heisBenGunn,maroonedontheislandforthreeyears.Hehasbeenlivingongoats,berries,and
oystersheasksforapieceofcheese.Speakingknowinglyofthepirates,BenGunnconvincesJim
(almost)thathewantstobeofhelptothesquire'spartyinreturnforpassagebacktoEnglandand
thathe'llbeabletohelp.HetellsJimthathewaspartofFlint'screwwhenthetreasurewasburied,and
wasmaroonedbylatershipmates,towhomhehadtoldthestory,whentheywereunabletofindthe
treasure.Gunnalsosaysthatheisrich,astatementhedoesnotexplainandwhichJimapparently
takesasmoreoftheman'salmostincomprehensibleraving.ButjustasGunnhastoldJimwherehis
boatishidden,bywhichhesaystheymaymaketheirwaytotheshipafterdark,theyhearcannonfire
fromtheship,thensmallarmsfire,andthen,soon,JimseestheBritishflagflyingontheislandoverthe
topsoftrees.

ChapterXVI:NarrativeContinuedbytheDoctor:HowtheShipWasAbandoned
Ontheship,thedoctorandtheothersgetimpatientwithwaiting.ThedoctorandHuntergoashoreina
jollyboat(asmall,ship'sboat).Theyreachthestockade,insideofwhichisaloghousebuiltbyFlint's
men.Itcanhouseuptofortypeopleandcaneasilybedefendedagainstattack.Theyhearaman
scream(thisisAlan,althoughtheydonotknowitatthetime)andthenreturntotheshipforsupplies,
leavingJoyceandHuntertodefendthestockade.
Backontheship,theyeasilyasserttheircommandovertheship'ssixwouldbemutineers.Theymake
severaltripstoloadupthestockadewithsupplies.Ontheirfinaltripashore,theytakewiththemone
seaman,AbrahamGray,whohasdecidednottojointhemutineers.
ChapterXVII:NarrativeContinuedbytheDoctor:TheJollyBoat'sLastTrip
Thejollyboatisoverloadedandisindangerofdriftingoffcourse.Thereisalsothedangerofbeingshot
atbythepirateswhoremainontheHispaniola.Thesquireshootsandwoundsoneofthemasfiveof
thepiratesfireacannonatthejollyboat.Whenthecannonisfiredagain,thejollyboatsinksinthree
feetofwater.Themenlosethreeoftheirgunsastheywadeashore.Halfoftheirgunpowderand
provisionsarelosttoo.
ChapterXVIII:NarrativeContinuedbytheDoctor:EndoftheFirstDay'sFighting

Asthemencomeashore,theymakeforthestockade.Sevenmutineerspursuethem,butHunter,
Joyce,Dr.Liveseyandthesquireopenfire,killingonemanandforcingtheotherstoflee.ThenRedruth
isshotandmortallywounded.Theyreachthestockade,andthecaptainrunsupaBritishflag.The
mutineerscontinuetofireatthemfromoutsidebutcausenodamage,althoughtheydosucceedin
stealingsomeofthemen'sstoresthathavebeenlaidbarebytheoutgoingtide.Justasthedoctoris
contemplatingwhatmighthavebeenJim'sfate,Jimreturnstothestockade.
ChapterXIX:NarrativeResumedbyJimHawkins:TheGarrisonintheStockade
JimtakesupthenarrativewhereheleftoffattheendofChapterXV.BenGunntellshimthathewishes
toseethedoctororthesquireandmakesomeproposaltothem.BentellsJimwherehemaybefound.
Thetwoofthemthenscatterindifferentdirectionswhentheyhearthesoundofcannonfire.Jimmoves
fromonehidingplacetoanother.Hefinallydecidestoreturntothestockade.Healsonotesthewhite
rockwhereBen'sboatmaybefound.
Inthestockadeheiswarmlyreceived.CaptainSmollettkeepsallthemenoccupiedsotheydonotget
depressedabouttheirsituation.Hesetsuparotatingscheduleofwatchessendsmenoutforfirewood,
andordersagravedugforRedruth.Thesquire,whohadformerlydislikedthecaptain,nowappreciates
him.However,thesquire,thedoctorandthecaptainareattheirwits'endtoknowwhattodo.Rations
arelow.Theydecidetokillasmanyofthebuccaneersastheycan.Fifteenareleft,andthedoctor
expectsmanyofthemtocontractmalaria,sincetheyarecampedinamarsh.ThenSilverarriveswitha
flagoftruce.
ChapterXX:Silver'sEmbassy
ThemeninthestockadefearthatSilver'sflagoftruceisatrick.Silverannouncesthathewantstomake
terms.Hehasbeenelectedcaptainbythemen.Onreceivingapromisefromthecaptainthathewillnot
beharmed,Silverwalkstothestockade.Heisnotallowedin,however,andhastositonthesandjust
outside.Silveralludestoanattackthathadtakenplacethepreviousnight,whichthemeninthe
stockadeknownothingof.JimassumesthatBenGunnmusthaveattackedthemutineersandkilledone
ofthem.
Silversaysthathewantsthemapthatshowswherethetreasureisburied.Butthecaptainisinnomood
tonegotiate.Silverpersists.Hesaysthatiftheygivehimthemap,hewillallowthembackontheship,
withthetreasure,andensurethattheyareputashoresomewheresafe.Ortheycouldstayonthe
island,withadequateprovisions,andSilverwillsendashiptopickthemup.Thecaptainhasa
counterproposal.Ifthemengivethemselvesup,hewillclaptheminironsandreturnthemtoEngland
forafairtrial.HethentellsSilvertobeonhisway.Silvercrawlsaway,cursing.Hepromisesanattack
withinanhour.
ChapterXXI:TheAttack
Thecaptaintakeschargeandorganizesthemensotheyarebestabletodefendthestockadefromthe
expectedattack.Theyearnestlykeepwatchforoveranhour,butnothinghappens.Thenthereare
gunshotsfromallsides.Becauseofthenumberofshotscomingfromthenorth,thedefendersconclude
thatthemainattackwillcomefromthatdirection.Amomentlatersevenpiratesclimboverthefenceinto
theenclosure.Twoareimmediatelyshot,andoneflees.Theremainingfourswarmintothestockade.
Hunterisclubbedtothefloorwithablowfromhisownmusket,whichhadbeenwrenchedfromhis
hands.Thesituationbecomesveryconfusedinthesmokyloghouseasthefightingdevelops.Jim
dodgesoutofthewayofablowfromJobAnderson,andGraythenkillsAnderson.Twomorepirates
arekilledandthelastoneflees.Butthemenhavepaidaprice.Hunterisbadlywounded,thecaptain
slightlylessso,andJoyceisdead.
ChapterXXII:HowMySeaAdventureBegan
Dr.Liveseytreatsthewounded.Onepiratedies,asdoesHunter.Thecaptainhasshoulderandleg
injuries,andistoldheshouldnotwalkormovehisarmforweeks,andshouldspeakaslittleas
possible.Afterdinner,tothesurpriseofeveryone,thedoctorleavesthestockadeandgoesoffalone
intothewoods.JimrealizesthatLiveseyhasgonetomeetBenGunn.Jimalsodecidestoslipoutwhen
nooneiswatching,sothathecansearchforBen'sboatunderthewhiterock.Itisafternoonwhenhe

leavesandbytheeveninghefindstheverysmall,crudehomemadeboat.ThenJimhasanotheridea,
totaketheboatoutatnightandcuttheHispaniolaadrift.Thiswouldpreventthemutineerssailingaway
tosea.
ChapterXXIII:TheEbbTideTurns
Thesmallboat(calledacoracle)provesdifficulttomanage,turningineverydirectionexcepttheone
Jimwantstogoin.Nonetheless,hereachestheHispaniolaandcutsthehawser(theanchorrope).He
alsohearsthetwodrunkencrewmembersonboardquarrelingfiercely.Asschoonerandcoracleglide
throughthewater,Jimgrabsalightcordthattrailsfromtheship,andpullshimselfalongsideit.Hetakes
apeekthroughthecabinwindowandseesthetwomenfighting.OneofthemisthecoxswainIsrael
Hands.TheHispaniolaissweptbythecurrenttowardstheopensea,andJimisterrified,expectingthat
theragingbreakerswilldestroybothshipandcoracle.Heliesflatatthebottomofhisboatforhours,
andeventuallymanagestosleep.
ChapterXXIV:TheCruiseoftheCoracle
Jimwakesupanditismorning.Hiscoracleisatthesouthwestcorneroftheisland.Realizingthe

extendsalongthefrontofthejib.)Atthesametime,theHispaniolastrikesthecoracle,leavingJimon
theHispaniolawithnolineofretreat.

ChapterXXV:IStriketheJollyRoger
Jimtumblesontothedeck.Heseesthetwomenwhohadbeenfighting.Oneliesonhisbacktheother,
IsraelHands,isproppedagainstthebulwarks.Therearebloodstainsaroundbothofthem,andJimis
surethattheyhavekilledeachother.Ittranspires,however,thatalthoughoneman,whosenamewas
O'Brien,isdead,Handsisonlywounded.Jimfetcheshimsomebrandy.HeannouncestoHandsthat
hehastakenpossessionoftheship.HetakesdowntheJollyRoger,theblackpirates'flagthattheship
hadbeenflying.HandsofferstotellJimhowtosailtheshipifJimwillgivehimfoodandwaterandtend
tohiswounds.Theymakeanagreement,andwithinminutestheshipissailingtowardtheNorthInlet,
whereJimhopestobeachit.ButhedoesnottrustHands,andfearstreachery.
ChapterXXVI:IsraelHands
AsJimandHandstalkoverameal,HandsasksJimtogobelowdecktothecabintofetchhimabottle
ofwine.Jimsuspectsthisisatrick.Jimpretendstogoforthewine,butinsteadclimbstheforecastle
ladderandwatchestoseewhatHandswilldo.Handsfetchesaknifethatwasconcealedinacoilof
rope,andhidesitinhisjacket.Jimthenrunstothecabin,fetchesthewineandreturnstothedeck.He
guessesthatHandswillnotactuntiltheshipissafelyashore,sinceheneedsJim'sassistance.With
Handsgivingtheinstructions,Jimnavigatestheshiptotheshore.Intheexcitementofthese
maneuvers,Jimalmostforgetsthedangerheisin.HeturnshisheadtoseeHandsbearingdownon
him,knifeattheready.Jimletsgoofthetiller,whichhitsHandsandstopshim.Jimdrawsapistolfrom
hispocketandtriestofireit,butseawaterhasmadeituseless.Handsrecoversandchaseshimagain.
Thentheybothstop,asJimreadieshimselftododgeoutofhispursuer'spath.
TheHispaniolalurchesasitstrikesthesand.Thedeckisatanangleoffortyfivedegrees,andbothJim
andHandslosetheirfooting.Jimisfirstup,andheclimbsuptothecrosstrees(acrosspiecehighona
mast),wherehesitsdown.Heprepareshissecondpistolforfiring.Handsattemptstoclimbtowhere
Jimis,butJimstopshimbythreateningtoshoothimdead.Handspretendsthatheisbeaten,butthen
suddenlythrowsaknifeatJim,hittinghimintheshoulderandpinninghimtothemast.Jimfiresbothhis

pistols,almostwithoutknowingwhatheisdoing.Handsishit.Heloseshisgripandfallsintothewater
dead.
ChapterXXVII:"PiecesofEight"
TheknifeholdsJimtothemastonlybyasliverofskin,andhesoonbreaksfree.Hereturnstothedeck
andtendstohiswound,whichisbleedingfreely.HeheavesthebodyofO'Brienoverboard.Itisnow
earlyevening,andingoodspiritsJimwadesashore.Heleavestheshiponitssideandheadsforthe
stockadetorejoinhiscompanions.Asnightfallshefindsithardtokeephisbearings,butthenthemoon
risesandmakeshistaskeasier.Hewalksintotheloghouse,whereeveryoneappearstobeasleep.He

thattheywereallkilled.SilverspeaksinafriendlywaytoJim,butallJimfeelsisdespair.Silversays
thatthedoctorandcaptainareangrywithhimandwillnottakehimback,soJimhasnochoicebutto
joinwiththepirates.Jimisrelievedtohearthathiscompanionsarestillalive.Silverexplainsthatthe
twogroupscutadeal.Silver'smentookoverthestockade,andthecaptain'spartywentsomewhere
else,Silverdoesnotknowwhere.
JimthentellsSilverabouthowitwashe,Jim,whofirstdisclosedthepirates'plottothedoctorandthe
others,anditwashewhocuttheHispaniolaloose.Hesaysheisnotafraidofthepirates,andifthey
sparehislife,hewilltryandsavethemfromthegallowswhentheyarebroughttotrial.Oneofthe
pirates,Morgan,wantstokillJim,butSilverrestrainshim.TheotherpiratesagreewithMorgan,but
Silverassertshisauthorityoverthem,andtellsthemtoleaveJimalone.
Thecrewasserttheirrighttotalkamongstthemselves,awayfromSilver.Theyleavetheloghouse.
Silverknowstheyareabouttodeposehimascaptain,buthesayshewillstandbyJim.Sinceheknows
thecaptain'smenhaveretakentheHispaniola,heknowshecannotescape,andhewantsJimtosave
himfromhanging.Jimagreestodowhathecan.SilverasksJimwhythedoctorgavehim,Silver,the
mapshowingwherethetreasureis,butJimdoesnotknowtheanswer.
ChapterXXIX:TheBlackSpotAgain
Thefivemenreturntothehouse.OneofthemhandsapieceofpapertoSilver.ItistheBlackSpot.

Dr.Liveseyarrivesattheloghouse.HeisgreetedwarmlybySilver,andproceedstotreatthesick.Then
heaskstospeaktoJim.SilversayshewilltakeJimoutsidesotheycantalkthere.Silverdealswiththe
angerofthemen,whothinkheistryingtoarrangeaseparatepeaceforhimself.Onceoutofthehouse,
SilvertellsthedoctorthathesavedJim'slifeandwantsthedoctortoputinagoodwordforhimand

SilverthanksJimfornotrunningaway,andsaysthatthetwoofthemmuststicktogether.Thenhe
bolstershismenbysayingthattheyhavetheupperhand,andsaystheywilltakeJimalongashostage

Silverisconfidentthattheyarenearthetreasure.Butthemenarestillthinkingabouttheskeletonand
aboutFlint,thepiratewhokilledAllardyce.Suddenly,fromoutofthemiddleofatreeinfrontofthem,a
thin,highvoiceisheardsingingthepirates'song.Themenareterrified,thinkingtheyarehearingFlint's
ghost.ThisisconfirmedforthemwhenthesamevoiceutterswhattheyknowtohavebeenFlint'slast
words.Silvertriestorallythem.Hepointsoutthatthevoicecarriedanecho,whichtellshimthatitisnot
thevoiceofaghost.Jimthinksthisisaweakargument,butitconvincesthemen.ThenSilversuddenly
realizeswhothevoicebelongsto.ItisthevoiceofBenGunn.Theothermenrecognizeittoo,once
Silverhasmentionedit.Theytakenonoticeofit,becausenoonetakesanynoticeofBenGunn.
Theygetnearertothetreeunderwhichthetreasureliesburied.Silveriseagertofindit,andJimknows
thathehasforgottenallabouthisdealwiththedoctor.Hejustwantstogetthemoney,killeveryone
elseandsailoffwithhisloot.Butwhenthemenreachthesiteofthetreasure,alltheyfindisanempty

Themenarestunned,butSilverrecoversquickly.HesideswithJimandmovesawayfromthefivemen.

Hispaniola.ThisiswhythedoctorgaveSilverthemapshowingwherethetreasurelay.

anotheranchor.ThesquireacknowledgestoSilverthathewillnotbeprosecuted.Theyenterthecave
