What is the "Keep a Clean School Competition" about? The "Keep a Clean School Competition" is a programme for waste reduction and pollution prevention in Southwestern University- South Campus. It is an annual programme, which will be implemented this year in secondary level in Southwestern University- South Campus. This year, Environment SWU-SC plans to expand this programme. The goal, objectives and activities are highlighted below. Goal: To implement an educational programme to reduce solid waste generation and pollution in secondary school in Southwestern University- South Campus Objectives: 1. To increase awareness among students of the need to reduce solid waste pollution in Southwestern University- South Campus. 2. To improve student knowledge of ways to reduce solid waste generation and properly dispose of solid waste. 3. To facilitate development of positive student attitudes for a pollution-free campus. 4. To encourage students to take actions to reduce the generation of solid waste and to practice appropriate waste disposal habits. Elements: 1. Reduction in generation of solid waste: reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink principles. 2. Demonstration of proper waste disposal techniques to reduce solid waste pollution. Activities: The Clean School Competition will include the following: 1. Students involved in actions and practices to reduce waste generation and pollution in schools. This will be evaluated during unannounced visits by High-school Faculty Teachers 2. Students engaged in classroom and field activities about waste reduction and proper disposal. An information packet distributed to teachers will facilitate this. How is the competition run? The competition will be open to secondary school in Southwestern University-South Campus. Criteria for judging: Floor and corridor----------------------------------- 20% Blackboard, cabinets and tables------------------20% Arrangement of Chairs------------------------------20% Waste Management---------------------------------20% Overall appearance of the classroom-----------20% For a total of------------------------------------------100% A challenge certificate will also be awarded to the school judged overall to be the cleanest school in Tobago. Additional prizes are being sought to complement the prizes identified above. Last year, Scarborough SDA won first place in the primary school category, and St Joseph's Convent was winner in the secondary school category and overall winner of the Colfire Challenge Trophy.
