Madhya Pradesh on 2 February 2015 won the 10th National Award for excellent work in Mahatma
Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA).
The award was presented to Madhya Pradesh Panchayats and Rural Development Minister Gopal
Bhargava by the Union Rural Development Minister Virendra Singh at the MGNREGA summit held in
New Delhi.
The award was given to Madhya Pradesh for convergence of MGNREGA and other schemes for
construction of permanent assets and for excellent work in providing opportunities for earning
permanent income.
Madhya Pradesh is leading in the construction of permanent assets through MGNREGA
convergence in the country. 74 percent construction of permanent assets has been done through
MGNREGA in the state.
As many as 179 crore 11 lakh man days of employment have been created. Out of these, 77 crore
36 lakh man days of employment have been provided to female labourers.
Electronic Fund Management System was also introduced in the State in April 2014 to ensure
transparency in accountancy and immediate payment of wages to labourers.
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA)
MGNREGA aims to ensure livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage
employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled
manual work.
It is social security program that aims to guarantee the right to work and create durable assets such
as roads, canals, ponds, wells, etc.
Initially on 2 February 2006, MGNREGA was implemented in 200 districts. It was extended to cover
all the districts of India from 1 April 2008.
