UK TRANSIT RULES
Effective 1st December, the current United Kingdom TWOV concession will change and
become the United Kingdom Transit Rules.
The changes will be reflected in:
TIMATIC
UK Visa Information Card (VIC)
UK Visa poster https://www.gov.uk/goverment/publications/uk-visa-requirementslist-for-carriers
The visa checker tool https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa
In respect of the transit changes the key things to remember are:
1. LANDSIDE TRANSIT (passengers do need to pass through the UK border)
2. ALL visa nationals will require a UK visa OR a landside exemption document and
meet the 3 rules of landside transit:
Arrive and depart by air
Have a confirmed onward flight that departs before 23:59 the following day
Hold the correct documents for their destination
3. AIRSIDE TRANSIT (passengers who do not need to change airport and do not need
to pass through the UK border) and meet the 3 rules of airside transit:
Arrive and depart by air and
Have a confirmed onward flight departing the same day from the same airport
Hold the correct documents for their destination
Determine if the passengers country is a RED nationality or BLACK nationality (see
the VIC, Visa Poster or other guides to determine which colour applies).
If "BLACK" they only need to meet the 3 rules of airside transit:

Arrive and depart by air and

Have a confirmed onward flight departing the same day from the same airport
Hold the correct documents for their destination

If "RED" they need to meet the 3 rules of AIRSIDE TRANSIT above and hold a UK visa OR an
airside exemption document.
