NATHAN SWANN
Drew, what are you doing! Get
dressed man! We have to be at the
restaurant in a half hour!
DREW CASELLI lying lazily on couch watching TV
DREW CASELLI
Man when did you become my mom?
When we were with Phi Zeta, you
couldve cared less about schedules
or timekeeping...
NATHAN SWANN
When we were with Phi Zeta...
(YELLS loudly as if irritated)
I was never sober!
DREW CASELLI
Exactly! Man you should be like
that now! Besides if its if youre
so stressed, we could always not
show up.
NATHAN SWANN
And what would we tell Hannah and
Jane Beth? Hannah has been my
girlfriend for three years and is
now my fiancee! She knows you and
your excuses too well by now.
DREW CASELLI
Ugh youre right but Im sick of
Jane Beth! Shes attached to Hannah
like a dog and Im only dragged on
your stupid dates so that she
doesnt feel like the third wheel!
NATHAN SWANN
Dude, stop. Dont be mean. Jane
Beth is really nice, and she really
likes you. Plus shes pretty cute.
DREW CASELLI
Yeah thats not really the problem!
Shes just soooo southeren! Here
Ill show you! Tell me something
sad.
NATHAN THINKS for a while

My dog died.
DREW CASELLI
(In a mocking southern accent)
Oh you poor thang, Im sawy for ur
loss darlin.
(Back to regular voice)
Now tell me something happy.
NATHAN THINKS again
NATHAN SWANN
I got a promotion.
DREW CASELLI
(again in a mocking southern
accent)
Oh yay sug I just knew ya hayd it
in you!
(again in his regular voice)
Its too much, I cant take it!
NATHAN SWANN
So a future with Jane Beth isnt in
the cards?
DREW CASELLI
Do you remember that time last June
when you and Hannah decided to skip
out on the double date and left us
alone?
NATHAN SWANN
Yea.
DREW CASELLI
Worst date of my life! It wasnt in
the cards then, and it definitely
isnt in the cards now. I cant
even talk to her without getting
annoyed!
NATHAN SWANN
Whatever man, you just better be
getting ready soon. Im going to
fix my tie.
NATHAN WALKS into next room of the small studio apartment.
Though extremely close to the living room, the kitchen
serves as a pathway to the back two rooms--the bedroom and
the bathroom. The apartment is deceptively spacious.

Hey, on your way to the bathroom
can you throw me a beer from the
fridge?
NATHAN SWANN
Will you behave at dinner and get
dressed if I do?
DREW CASELLI
I already told you Im tired of
Jane Beth. I dont want to go.
Besides the Celtics are playing the
Heat tonight.
NATHAN SWANN
Seriously?
(as if in disbelief)
Youre not going to do me this one
favor?
DREW CASELLI
Every time you go out with Hannah
its a favor because Jane Beth
always comes! Its almost like Jane
Beth and I are dating, from all
these "favors"
(Holds up fingers and does air
quotes)
that Ive given you!
TV goes to commercial break. DREW GETS UP to look out the
window of the living room. A view of the inner city of
Boston can be seen
NATHAN SWANN
Man youre unbelievable! Come on,
one last time. Tonight will be the
last night and then Ill talk to
Hannah about it!
DREW CASELLI
Im unbelievable? Man it isnt even
about tonight anymore!
NATHAN SWANN
What are you talking about?
DREW CASELLI
Our friendship is supposed to be
give and take!
(Begins pacing and turns away
from window)

All I do is give, while you take
away from me and Im tired of it.
You antagonize me about being lazy
and nag me daily, as if Im beneath
you in some way!
NATHAN SWANN
Man youre my best friend!
(Defensively)
I live with you for goodness sake!
Two years ago, Hannah asked me to
move in with her and I wouldnt
even do that!
DREW CASELLI
Its because you think that Im
dependent on you in some way! Just
because you helped me through the
hazing in Phi Zeta doesnt mean
that Im dependent on you.
(Faces window again)
Im not a kid! I do you favors
because Im your friend! When Ive
had enough, as a grown man Ill say
it, and tonight--Im not going to
the resturaunt.
NATHAN SWANN
Is this really how you have always
felt?
DREW TURNS back around to face NATHAN
DREW CASELLI
Always? No. But enough is enough!
In fact, name one solid youve done
for me after Phi Zeta.
A LONG AND UNCOMPFORTABLE SILENCE PASSES
DREW CASELLI
Exactly, I think my debt is repaid.
NATHAN SWANN
Youre right, Im sorry man.
DREW CHOKES on beer
DREW CASELLI
What? Who are you and wheres my
friend Nathan?

Look I may have become a bit
complacent in our friendship. Ever
since I started attending graduate
school what we do as roommates and
friends has just become routine. I
guess I forgot all about the good
times we had as bros. And me
falling in love with Hannah
probably didnt help
either--especially because of Jane
Beth.

ANOTHER SILENCE PASSES as DREW is STUNNED

NATHAN SWANN
What? I cant be wrong every once
in a while?
DREW CASELLI
More like once in a millennium!
NATHAN LOOSENS tie and REACHES for the phone
DREW CASELLI
What are you doing?
NATHAN SWANN
Im going to call Hannah and
cancel. Ill tell her Im doing you
a solid.
(pauses and thinks)
And who knows, maybe she and Jane
Beth can have a girls night or
something.
DREW CASELLI
Alright! Bro time! Thanks man!
NATHAN LOOKS at watch and THINKS for a long time
NATHAN SWANN
Ok! The Celtics game comes on at
9:00. How much beer do you think we
can drink before then?
DREW CASELLI
(estatic to be hanging with
Nathan)
Thats my boy! Theres the Phi Zeta
guy I knew!
NATHAN and DREW SIT and the two proceed to DRINK beer and
PLAY Xbox before the Celtics game
