ADDITION OF

VECTORS

What is Vector
A vector can stands for a lot of quantity.
In physics, a vector quantity usually stands for a
quantity has direction as well as magnitude.

Example:Displacement,velocity,acceleration,andforce.

Two vectors can be added together to determine

the result, as the quantities that have direction as
well as magnitude, they must be added in a
special way.

We use tail-to-tip method of adding vectors to do

the addition of vectors.

How do we add vectors?

On a diagram, draw one of the vectors-call it to
scale.

Next draw the second vector, , placing its tail at

the tip of the first vector and being sure its
direction is correct.

The arrow drawn from the tail of the first vector

to the tip of the second vector represents the
sum, or resultant, of the two vectors.

Example:
Eric leaves the base camp and hikes 11 km, north
and then hikes 11 km east. Determine Eric's
resulting displacement.

We can use the Pythagorean theorem is a useful

method for determining the result of adding two
vectors.
