Olorunsogo Power Plant (Phase I) has an installed capacity of 336MW.

It is a gas
turbine power plant comprising of 8 x 42MW independent units. The Units are
furnished with a gas-turbo generator which is air-cooled. Power from the station
joins the National grid through 330KV transmission lines. The power plant attains
an average efficiency of 25%.
The station is equipped with a control room for coordinating operational activities
of the units. Parameters monitored from the control room include: inlet air
temperature, lube oil temperature, inlet gas temperature, inlet gas pressure, etc. The
National grid determines the base-load, however, preselected load set-points at
start-up are usually 10MW or 15MW. A switchyard is located some distance from
the Unit transformers. Support systems include: a water treatment plant, tower
cooling system (and closed circuit cooling system), hydrant systems and sprinklers
for protection against fire, etc.
Unit Configuration
Each gas turbine unit consists of the following:
1) Accessory compartment:
The accessory compartment consists of a starting/cranking motor, torque
converter and a ratcheting mechanism.
2) Compressor compartment:
The compressor is a 17 stage compressor
3) Combustion chamber: consisting of
- 10 can-angular combustors,
- 10 fuel nozzles,
- 4 flame detectors,
- 2 spark plugs
- A Gas Manifold
- Mechanical valves: Speed Ratio Valve (SRV) and Gas Control Valve
(GCV)
4) Turbine compartment
- A 3-stage turbine
5) Gas turbo generator:
- Air-cooled generator, brushless exciter

CHALLENGES
The following challenges were highlighted by staff of the plant:
1) Lubricating oil Leakage: This was stated as the major maintenance
challenge.
2) Excessive Vibration: Abnormal conditions due to the unstable grid results in
excessive vibration in gas turbine equipment.

CONCLUSION
Despite the limited time available, valuable knowledge was gained with-respect-to
gas-turbine design, and ancillary equipment. I recommend a future visit to
Olorunsogo Phase II, a combined cycle gas-turbine plant.
