Case Type Setup and Maintenance
Case Type Setup and Maintenance
Case Type Setup and Maintenance
Introduction
Workforce Management supports the ability to define and apply case types for use in
discrete job standards. Case types are also used in conjunction with machine types
and location types in the development of discrete job standards.
Note: Case types are normally defined at installation for your facility.

Case Types
A case type is a classification that defines a range of cube and weight values. Every
discrete task specifies the cube and weight of the product being moved, which is in
turn cross-referenced against a case type. All material-handling configurations within
the same case type range are assumed to require the same amount of labor to handle.
The case type is defined by these data structures:
Cube Size dimension of the case type. This size dimension consists of the
smallest and largest size dimension of the case type.
Weight Weight dimension of the case type. This weight dimension consists of
the lowest and highest weight dimension of the case type.
Once case types have been defined, you will be prompted to repair these
configuration errors:
Page 2
Overlaps An overlap occurs when the cube and/or weight dimensions for the
case type overlap the ranges of one or more of the other case types.
Gaps A gap occurs when the cube and/or weight dimensions for the case type
misses the ranges of the other case types.

Grab Factors
You can assign a grab factor to each case type definition. A grab factor is the number
of cases/units that are regularly obtained or placed in a single motion. Once defined,
the system uses the grab factor to determine the number of time measurement units
(TMUs) that are allotted when a user handles these case types.
For example, if a very small (VS) case type is normally handled 4 at a time, the grab
factor is set to 4. If 13 TMUs are allowed for each obtain of a VS case, then every
time a user obtains
1 VS case, the system determines that 1 grab is necessary and allows for a total
of 13 TMUs.
4 VS cases, the system determines that 1 grab is necessary and allows for a total
of 13 TMUs.
5 VS cases, the system determines that 2 grabs are necessary and allows for a
total of 26 TMUs.
9 VS cases, the system determines that 3 grabs are necessary and allows for a
total of 39 TMUs.
Grab factors set in Case Type Maintenance are used as template grab factor values
for the system.
Note: Grab factors can be overridden for location types on Location Type
Maintenance and discrete flowcharts on Discrete Flowchart Maintenance,
but these changes will only be in effect for the specified location type or
discrete flowchart.

Before you begin using case types, you need to complete these setup tasks.

2. Standard case types are provided with the base data. If additional case types are
needed, take these actions.
1. For each of the case types that you are going to create, take the
measurements for the
weight dimensions.
2. Create the case types. For more information, see Maintain Case Types
following in this chapter.

Description
Overlaps
Opens the Case Type Overlaps window that lets you view case
types whose settings overlap with the settings for the selected case
type.
Case Code
Unique identifier of the case type. The case code is limited to two
characters.
Case Description
Cube Low
Minimum size requirement for this case type. The size cannot
overlap the size of another case type.
Cube High
Maximum size allowed for this case type. The size cannot overlap
the size of another case type.
Weight Low
Minimum weight requirement for this case type. The weight cannot
overlap the weight of another case type.
Weight High
Maximum weight allowed for this case type. The weight cannot
overlap the weight of another case type.
Overlaps
(Read only) Indicates that the cube and/or weight ranges for this
case code overlap the ranges of one or more of the other case
codes.
Gaps
(Read only) Indicates that there is a gap between the cube and/or
weight ranges for this case code and the ranges of the other case
codes.

you want to modify.
4. In the Case Code box, type a unique identifier for the case type.
5. In the Case Description box, type a description for the case type.
6. In the Cube Low and Cube High boxes, type the minimum and maximum size
allowed for this case type.
Note: You cannot have any gaps or overlaps in the cube ranges across
case types.
7. In the Weight Low and Weight High boxes, type the minimum and maximum
weight allowed for this case type.
8. If applicable, in the Applied Grab Factor box, type the number of case/units
that are regularly obtained and placed in a single motion. The system uses this
setting to adjust the number of TMUs that are allotted to a user.
Note: If you do not enter a grab factor, a default value of 1 is used.

11. Verify that the Overlaps and Gaps check boxes are clear. If either check box is
selected, then modify the case type information as needed to remove the overlaps
or gaps.
Note: If overlaps exist, you can click Overlaps to view a list of all of the case
types that overlap the current case type. Click Close when you are finished
viewing the list.
