Tritones: Violin Is Detuned To An Eb To Create A Tritone Between The Top Two
Since medieval times, the interval of the tritone (three tones) has been
known as diabolus in musica or the devil in music.
This is probably because it is a difficult interval to sing, and creates
unstable harmony. The top string of the
violin is detuned to an Eb to create a tritone between the top two
strings. The first entrance of the solo has Death tuning up with his
spooky new tuning:
The proper name for detuning a string for musical effect is scordatura,
and can be likened to alternative guitar
tunings used in rock music, such as drop D tuning.
