Tritones

Since medieval times, the interval of the tritone (three tones) has been
known as diabolus in musica or the devil in music.
This is probably because it is a difficult interval to sing, and creates
unstable harmony. The top string of the
violin is detuned to an Eb to create a tritone between the top two
strings. The first entrance of the solo has Death tuning up with his
spooky new tuning:
The proper name for detuning a string for musical effect is scordatura,
and can be likened to alternative guitar
tunings used in rock music, such as drop D tuning.
