tense

The simple past


tense is used to
express an
action that
happened at a
particular time
in the past.

Examples

Ganesh walked to the bus stop


yesterday.
Litesh and his brother went to the cinema
last week.
The verb walked and went tell us
about past actions. They are both in the
simple past tense.

The past tense of verbs can be


formed by :

Adding d, ed or ied to verbs.


These are called regular verbs.
E.g. live- lived
bake-baked
add-added
talk-talked
cry-cried
study-studied

c) Changing the spelling of verbs. These are


called irregular verbs.
E.g.
blow-blew
run-ran
do-did
sleep-slept
give-gave

d) Some past tense verbs do not change


form at all.
E.g. hit-hit
cut-cut
put-put
read-read

Zags teacher tells him to make


a timetable.

Zag sits under a tree and thinks


for a long time.

Zag runs home and makes his


own timetable. He is very proud.

Zags mother sees her new


table. She is very angry.
