2015 Dave Ferguson Scholarship

Information Packet
Enclosed is information on the 2014-2015 Arkansas Association of Conservation Districts Dave
Ferguson Scholarship Contest. This contest will give a young person in our county the
opportunity to win up to $250 towards college expenses when they choose a conservationrelated course of study at an accredited Arkansas college or university.
The essay should include all three of the following components:
2014 2015 Theme & Criteria:
Conservation Districts: What is their purpose and why are they important to their
landowners?
1) Explain what a conservation district is.
2) Give an overview of the purpose of the conservation district and its service to its
landowner.
3) Provide an actual example of a landowner who has been helped by the conservation
district and how. (May use photos & conservation district will help locate landowners, if
needed)
The enclosed information sheet and entry forms should be distributed immediately to any
eligible student so they can return their entries by the deadline. The closing date for entries is
March 18, 2015.

Q What do I need to cover in my essay?
A Your essay should include all three areas.
1) Explain what a conservation district is.

Q What is a conservation related field?
A Agriculture, horticulture, forestry, range management, soil sciences, environmental
management, environmental law, botany, and biology, in addition to several others, are all
considered conservation related fields.
Q Who is eligible?
A District residents who are currently high school sophomores, juniors or seniors, and who
have a grade point average of at least 2.0 are eligible.
Q What is the prize structure?
A The Perry County Conservation District offers a $250.00 scholarship.
Q What are the deadlines?
A Applications should be received at the Perry County Conservation District office by March
18, 2015.

Also, please find enclosed my essay on the topic, "Conservation Districts: What is their
purpose and why are they important to the landowners? (Minimum length 500 words). I
am prepared to make an oral presentation to the judges on this same conservation-related
topic. I am willing to meet with the judges for a personal interview.
I intend to follow a course of study at a college or university in the state of Arkansas in a
conservation related field.
