Problem Solving
1. Determine the maximum force P that can be applied without causing the two 50-kg crates
to move. The coefficient of static friction between each crate and the ground is f = 0.25.

FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMS
2. If P = 300 N, determine the friction developed between the 90-kg crate and the ground. The
coefficient of static friction between the crate and the ground is f = 0.3.

3. Refer to the figure below. Determine the necessary force P acting parallel to the plane to
cause motion to impend. Assume that the coefficient of friction is 0.25 and that the pulley is
smooth.

4. For the series of blocks shown, determine the weight of block C if the coefficient of friction
for all surfaces is 0.26. Mass of block A = 20 kg.; Mass of block B = 30 kg.

5. Determine the magnitude of the resultant, its pointing, and its direction cosines for the
following system of non-coplanar, concurrent forces. 300 lb (+3, -4, +6); 400 lb (-2, +4, -5);
200 lb (-4, +5, -3).
6. The square level plate shown has a mass of 12.23 kg. Compute the vertical reactions at
supports A, B, and C due to weight of the plate and the given vertical loads.

Each division = 1m
7. The points B, C and D of the cantilever framework shown below are attached to a vertical
wall. The 400 N load is parallel to the Z axis, and the 1200 N load is vertical. Compute the
force in each member.
